Ah. I misremembered. Fair enough.

Still, doing it for performance based bonuses that are largely dependent on the employer are bullshit. That's true whether it's retail or professional fighting. Promising PPV points to a fighter you refuse to promote is essentially promising money you know you won't have to pay.

DJ defending against another top p4p guy at his natural weight and even odds for the all time record is way more interesting.

It would be champion v champion, he would become a 2x champ, it would further cement his "best p4p" claim and it would be a way more impressive win that TJ. That's pretty drat intriguing.

Right, but there are some legal questions about a clause that says "if I don't make weight, my opponent gets all my money and I fight for free" so that is probably why they didn't try to make that guarantee anyway. Also if DJ wanted to make some real money, he'd agree to all that anyway and if TJ didn't make weight, they'd offer him Borg and he'd be like "nah" until they backed up a truck of money to his house.

I don't see the confusion. If you fail to make weight, your opponent always has the right to decline the bout, and then you don't get paid poo poo. What DJ wanted was a guarantee that if TJ failed to make weight, as he suspected, then DJ would still get paid under his contract even if he refuses to fight at a catchweight. TJ is not entitled to poo poo if he fails to make weight, these catchweight bouts only happen when the opponent says "ok fine, damnit, I'll take the 20% bribe, lets fight". Things are different for DJ when he's looking at both a title fight and a record-breaking title defense hanging on TJ's ability to make 125

Hey, if that becomes the consensus about him, at least, now, there is a consensus about him. Instead of the general public being unsure that he exists.

Also, the people that hate him (who are bizarrely numerous and vocal) didn't need this to hate him. This just becomes the latest thing they finish the sentence 'I was beginning to respect him until X' with. As if, if this hadn't happened, they would totally be a fan now.

The UFC organization has been notified that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Nick Diaz of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from Diaz’s alleged accumulation of three Whereabouts Failures within a 12-month period. Diaz, like all other UFC athletes, is enrolled in USADA’s UFC Registered Testing Pool and required to file accurate Whereabouts information in order to be located for out-of-competition, no-notice testing.

USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of Diaz’s case, who has been provisionally suspended pending the final resolution of this matter. Under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full and fair legal process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed. Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.

What DJ wants is both his and TJ's purse if TJ fails to make weight.

What if TJ doesn't make weight, then doesn't want to fight? Without getting into compelling specific performance laws or legal consideration, the UFC is paying out for 2 fighters and getting 0 fights. Is the commission going to sanction a fight where only one party gets paid? Traditional combat sports contracts have a show and win reward to incentivize both sides to perform, and without either TJ could just tap out at 4:59 of round 1 and be no less richer, and it is the commission's duty to ensure that all contestants compete honestly and to the best of their skill and ability. Also the UFC is wary of adding a lot of this weird stuff to its existing contracts for one-off bouts because they want them to be scrutinized as little as possible.

That's just a stupid and unreasonable request; even if TJ did verbally agree to it. Also, TJ is a disciplined professional that I wouldn't worry about in the least about making 125. nope. they just got done telling him that a superfight with cody wouldn't break the ppv threshhold, so fight ray borg and shut the gently caress up. so of course when a not champion from the cody division comes to call, i completely understand at least wanting an assurance that he can make weight. no? may as well fight ray borg. tj is not a draw. definitely not big enough to get dj over the line without some serious support on some unknown ppv. good decision imo.

The one thing we agree on is that on their own, DJ vs Cody or DJ vs TJ wouldn't draw enough PPV buys. There is already an assurance to make weight: 20% of TJ's purse if he decides to proceed with the fight at a catch weight. I know he didn't want to do this because he couldn't break his precious record (LOL). It comes down to all he cares about is the record. You think you would you know, want to PROVE that you're the best pound-for-pound fighter by beating a former champion in the weight class above, even if its a couple pounds heavier. This in turn would help your brand A LOT more than fighting Ray loving Borg. But no worry about that precious title record.

are you deliberately ignoring the part of the story where he was angling to fight the real, actual champion of the division above his next? or that immediately after this defense he intends to become a two division champ against a better fighter than tj?
