are you deliberately ignoring the part of the story where he was angling to fight the real, actual champion of the division above his next? or that immediately after this defense he intends to become a two division champ against a better fighter than tj?

Nope, but that fight didn't materialize for whatever lovely reason the UFC gave him, or maybe that they had TJ vs Cody already planned. So why not take the next best thing when that fight fell through? After all this poo poo I don't see them giving him any sort of opportunity again so he can kiss that dream goodbye.

Hahaha yeah he sure put his foot in it. I'm sure after he did Dana and tj this one solid he'd get all these sweet opportunities..... Fact is, if your next title defense is against one of two nobodies it's only fair that the nobody in the right division gets it. Especially when any question of ducking is dispelled when your very next fight features you beating up garbrandt.

He wanted to. He tried to get a fight with Sergio Pettis who is a bigger name than Borg and can make weight. The UFC told him he was fighting Borg.

If you want to hate on DJ at least take the Keven route. Don't make up bullshit that is easily disproven.

Are you really bringing Sergio Pettis into this? Saying he's a bigger name than Ray Borg isn't saying anything at all; he's still a nobody in a nobody division. I also feel like they want to build Sergio up more instead of sacrificing him right away.

Yall are idiots or don't watch a lot of sports if you genuinely believe the record MM is trying to break is pointless or dumb. When they bring up the loving stats on the screen showing most defenses won there isn't going to be an asterisk next to the number with a caption on the bottom "but it was to ray borg MM is actually a bitch".

Everyone is conveniently forgetting that MM wanted to fight lesser ranked slightly more known Sergio Petrie instead of Borg.

Forget the PPV buys, nobody is even writing loving articles about Borg v DJ. Money aside if DJ accepted a fight with TJ it would be the most media attention he's ever had by far.

DJ is literally scared to take the risk of fighting TJ because he wants to break the record and thinks it will help him in future negotiations (it won't).

For the record I think DJ beats either guy but TJ has like a 40% chance while I give Borg like a 1%. The odds will show how uninteresting the Borg fight is.

DJ vs TJ would be dope as hell and I hope it happens, but I don't think TJ is much of a draw and I think people are really overselling how much beating TJ would help his image with casual fans.

Sean Shelby, please have TJ fight a scrub at 125, ah this Ray Borg should do, and then make MM fight him with at regular pay.

Disagree. Frankie draws nothing but a win over him is one of the biggest feathers in the cap in MMA. Same with Aldo.

A win over Borg is meaningless on its own. A win over TJ would be the highlight of MM career thus far.

It would be really impressive, but that doesn't mean that it would make anyone suddenly start giving a poo poo about his fights or that substantially more people would tune in to watch that fight instead of the Ray Borg one.

Also, no one cares that Anderson beat a bunch of bottom of the barrel dudes on his streak and no one will care if MM breaks the record beating Ray Borg or TJ. A record is a record.

I think Mighty Mouse has some valid points and it's hard to argue that Dana isn't a dick, but at the end of the day, if his biggest gripe is money and they're offering him points to fight Dillashaw on PPV but he'd rather fight Borg on free tv, I have a hard time caring about his argument because he evidently doesn't care about it either.

And if the reason is because he won't hit the level for the points to kick in anyway then what the gently caress is all of this even about.

Well yeah if Dana told Mighty Mouse that a champion vs champion fight vs Garbrandt wouldn't be sellable, then a fight with TJ wouldn't be any better and the PPV points aren't very relevant then. So what it's about is Dana not getting what he wants and having a cry about it.

214 is maybe the best card ever? Better than 198 200 and 205 at least. Sage, Ortega, Knight, Manuwa, Burkman and Dober, aljo vs barao, Andre Fili probably gonna fight someone cool, and then the 3 title fights. I love everyone on that undercard except the random heavy and flyweights.

It's definitely very tough to ask for a title shot in a division you've never fought in shortly after losing your own belt in your actual division to a cripple.. You've got to wonder how many guys would be willing to accept a free chance at a title shot like that. Only the strongest, surely.

The endless cycle

DJ would 100% make more money fighting TJ; whether is contractually or through a backdoor deal. It wasn't going to be the main of a PPV anyways.

and yes its a coward move to duck somebody to fight somebody easier

Oh the old "backdoor deal." Please elaborate on this sweet deal where Dana White showers MM with cash money out of the goodness of his heart.

Then most UFC fighters are cowards because I god drat guarantee you that you if you put the same amount of cash on the line and told any fighter they can face someone that's a real threat or someone they'll beat handily, they're choosing the easy fight. It's a smart business decision. This isn't the schoolyard where they're trying to figure out who the toughest 9 year old is. They're trying to make money because this is their occupation.

Actually...he wouldn't. Or maybe he would. Who knows? We have basically no information about fighter pay beyond what But I'm going to choose to assume that Dana White, the guy who is full of poo poo every time he speaks, is still full of poo poo.

I also can't think of a single other instance where a champion in a division was told he had to fight a former champion from a higher weight class that had never fought at the lower weight class before. Has this ever happened?

Who gives a poo poo if it ever happened before? That's a poo poo argument. They are the match makers looking to make a higher profile fight because his division is essentially cleaned out.

Yeah there's been multiple instances where fighters have been open about their purse not exactly being their pay; Cowboy has come forward on multiple occasions IIRC.

Yes, DJ wants to make money, then loving fight somebody that's going to make you more money and/or help your brand.

So since Cowboy got some extra money that means MM will too? I have a hard time believing that especially given the fact that Dana and the UFC aren't particularly fond of MM since he doesn't follow along like a yes man with their plans.

The TJ fight isn't going to make him more money, that's the point everyone is making. The TJ fight isn't going to help his brand if he loses it and it may not help even if he wins because TJ isn't a marquee name. It has awful risk/reward which is the point.

And call it ducking or whatever the hell you want. If someone turns down a fight for monetary reasons, I have a hard time calling that "ducking." Is McGregor ducking every UFC fighter because he's going to fight Mayweather for gobs of cash?
