Yeah as funny as it is to constantly bust on him, Ainge is in a great position and I'm incredibly jealous. Plus he has my favorite coach in the world that he stole from my alma mater, Mr. Brad Stevens!

If the Sixers aren't going to sign any good free agents then that takes away a ton of the available cap room this season.

The only reason it's so easy to make fun of Ainge is he leaks everything he's going to do, might do, and would have done but didn't. He's like that weird kid on the playground that talks too much and lies about everything. Great GM though.

He's the anti-Morey who never lets anything leak ever and the few times he even talks about future plans ("We have something up our sleeve") he follows through by trading for CP3

Also he trades picks away like they're going out of style (oh my god I just dated myself with that expression)

Also if the Sixers aren't going to take on lovely contracts then that takes a huge bad contract sink out of the equation too. Which teams are left this offseason that realistically want to take on crappy contracts for assets? Sacramento, Brooklyn and maybe, but probably not Miami?

What I'm getting at is that Portland is hosed.

They're staying Belichick-quiet about it which means he'll never be the same again and they won't sign him to the max.

Ainge's style seems to be a wait and see approach because he knows nothing he can do at the present will win a championship. Like I highly doubt anything Morey is putting together will beat the Warriors and the Celtics themselves can't really do it even if they add PG3 and Heyward.

JaMychal Green would be the perfect player to put on the Wolves, I think. I'd be sad to see him go, but the young man has earned a big paycheck with his hard work and positive attitude and being better than Draymond and I'll not begrudge him that. Memphis already extended him a QO, but if a team comes through with cash money, then he must spread his wings and fly.

I've decided that the player I would like the Grizz to pursue with their MLE is none other than Secret Most Important Player Shaun Livingston. /vc/ is probably gone, and teams are eyeballing Tony Allen because he is still a solid defender and good locker room presence. I'm also curious to see what they do about Zbo. Might be a very sad offseason for Grit and Grind, because as much as I love those players...multi year guaranteed deals for aging vets are a hard pill to swallow. If Chandler Parsons sucks again this year, you're going to see his beautiful head on a pike outside the Grindhouse.

That's basically how I feel, I'm hunkering down for the long term plan but in the meantime it's been a nice surprise that the team has been able to go somewhat deep in the playoffs just a few years after being a lottery team. I enjoy the way they play basketball and will enjoy next season even though they don't have a shot to win the championship and I look forward to Danny trading down the draft picks again next year

I stopped reading the Simmons column the second he mentioned "Jay-Z hooking up with Kanye in 2011." Of all of his bad takes, thinking "Watch the Throne" was some type of iconic album is insane. "Watch the Throne" is Kanye's worst album so the metaphor doesn't even work unless Simmons means Harden is going to carry Chris Paul to a first round exit while having his worst season in 4 years.

It's so clear that he just emailed his new blood boy TATE and asked him for culturally relevant moments in the 2000s so he could stop relying on bad 90s stuff.

Edit: JK, I actually ended up skimming through it. I see he's advocating for the old "sign the best player of all time or move to another city" strategy.

As dumb as that Simmons column is, I am legitimately really surprised that no one is trying to move to Seattle right now with the amount of money flying around up there. With how readily the techbros have inundated Golden State, I would think trying to be the next team profiting off of that stupid bubble would be at the front of some owner's mind by now.

Yeah even Horford/Hayward/George/Bradley/Thomas, which would be unlikely cause they'd probably have to move Bradley, would leave the best 2 and may even 3 players on the court wearing yellow. Probably beats Cleveland and takes a couple on GS but if the only goal is a ring I think you use those picks. Try to build a team for the early mid 2020s while maintaining a winning culture that lets you draw or keep vets at a discount. Houston and Cleveland may as well go for broke now and hope for a miracle or GS injury but Boston has other options.

Meanwhile a constant stream of leaks keeps Boston fans convinced that every year is the year, every deadline is THE deadline, and so on. They'll always make the playoffs, always have assets, he'll always have a job, and reading about the Celtice will always be annoying.

Wasn't the minutes thing basically the only legit knock on Thibs? I seem to remember some interviews where he was asked and he blew it off the way very old men do, "The greats played 48! Don't make me laugh!" type of response?

I mean, after he was out the whole Bulls organization was exposed as having a seriously behind-the-curve training staff who didn't seem to be preparing the guys correctly, but there was a whole bunch of "why are your starters still in" type of moments. He is a psycho work-a-holic and expects the same from everyone else.

The GarPax post-firing smear folks overemphasized the issue for PR rear end in a top hat reasons, but it was still an issue. If you were grading him as a coach it wouldn't be enough to knock him even a third of a letter grade, but it was something competent team medicos should've had a word with him about. (someone back in 2007 really needed to tell Rose to stop landing sideways on one leg with the knees locked, the biomechanics in his pre-injury videos are terrifying, knowing how it turned out)

Didn't help that it all happened coming off the year when the Spurs looked all-time great with a team where not a single player went over 30 MPG http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/SAS/2014.html while Rose still wasn't back.

The minute complaint on Wings was totally overblown. He had guys like Butler and Deng who are the types of guys who soak up lots of minutes, just like Lebron, Iggy, Barnes, etc. Super-athletic wing players can play 34-37 minutes per game without any real risk. The Spurs example is funny because last year Pop played Kawhi almost 34 and LMA 32, so its not like they discovered one weird trick where you should keep guys under 30.

That same dumb opinion was used to blame Rose on Thibs, but Rose never played big minutes under Thibs. He actually played less under Thibs than he did under Vinny Del Negro. The year Rose first got hurt Thibs played him 35 minutes a game, which was below average for guys like him.

Where it does ring true is Thibs like to play big men more minutes than I am comfortable with. He ran Noah hard 2 of the years he was there and he played KAT a lot. I don't think its ridiculously high minutes, but I think pulling it back some would be good. He hasn't really had more injuries to bigs than you'd expect though, which is why that argument usually isn't aimed just at big players.

The arena situation is bad for whatever team moves here, meaning the city isn't gonna pay $999 billion for it like every other city does. As development goes up and up and our rent becomes ridiculous, the city's politics is moving more to the left. There's an avowed socialist running for mayor with a decent chance, but even the City of Commerce shill candidate isn't gonna throw a team owner some sweetheart deal on an arena

Im unsure how much Amazon employees would care about basketball, and that's a huge portion of the money in the city. Otoh you'd certainly get the Boeing/Nordstrom/Starbucks crowd. I did some training for work out in Redmond, and it was legitimately the highest prevalence of luxury cars I've seen in my life. Every other car was a Tesla, Range Rover, or Benz
