Fleta Mcgurn posted:I heard (maybe in this thread) that poutine was initially a mashed potato crust with beef and cheese; is that true and does anyone have a recipe? You are not as mistaken as the thread would have you believe, I think you've probably heard of poutine râpée, the older Acadian dish made from boiled grated/mashed potatoes stuffed with pork. I don't know how to link images while phone posting or I would, because the dish certainly belongs in this thread. To make it super French and Canadian they sometimes eat it with sugar or maple syrup.

Do not post the delicious steamed bread of my people here! That stuff is awesome with a light swish of cream cheese. I have to figure out how to make a gluten free version, because I really miss it.

Am I remembering correctly that this stuff is super sweet and kind of... maybe raisin-y tasting? There was some other flavor to it but I can't recall exactly what it was. I think I've had it but it's probably been 20 years now.

I won't argue that it's ugly or at least weird to imagine (canned bread!) but it really is quite delicious.

I figured it's kind of like a tinned pudding. Which is / was a reasonably acceptable thing.

Yeah that definitely sounds like parkin/toffee pudding which is basically cake saturated with syrup and would probably be improved by putting it in a can because it stops it drying out.

I was confused at first because to an American pudding is a very specific thing which this is most certainly not, but the description of syrup saturated cake is close. It's a very moist cakey bread. Maybe a touch oily feeling.

I mean there might be a specific meaning for it but over here "pudding" is broadly a synonym for dessert and basically encompasses anything that isn't a normal cake that you can eat covered in custard.
