Rangers really gotta dump Staal somehow in the next 2 years...gonna be interesting when McDonagh is up for a contract and whether they fish or cut bait. Could end up with a lot of money tied up in that defense (McDonagh, Shattenkirk, Smith, Skjei all probably going for over $4 mill) and you can't be paying Staal $5.7 mill on the third pairing in that situation. I have a feeling they will be shipping out guys like Hayes within the next few years and hope someone like Andersson can come in sooner rather than later Gonna be interesting cap times but in the meantime i really like that top 4 and potentially the whole six if Staal can be moved

So the Oilers signed 7 players who'll all likely play for Bakersfield next season, 3 of which (Rattie, Lowe, Ferlin) come from the 2011 draft. Normally this wouldn't be noteworthy, except this means that out of the 47 players the Oilers have signed to a contract next season (including Draisaitl), 10 of them are from the 2011 draft: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (1st overall) Adam Larsson (4th overall) Ryan Strome (5th overall) Oscar Klefbom (19th overall) Ty Rattie (32nd overall) Keegan Lowe (73rd overall) Dillon Simpson (92nd overall) Brian Ferlin (121st overall) Laurent Brossoit (164th overall) Iiro Pakarinen (184th overall) What is with Peter Chiarelli and his love of 2011 draft picks, aside from the fact the Bruins won the Cup that year.

I haven't really followed free agency day like I have in the past years, but looking over the FA thread this morning it seemed like a really large chunk of contracts were already "agreed on" things. Did something change regarding FA with how they negotiate that I missed? I always remember all of that coming out the second FA started with maybe some news leaking here and there about places people were going a few days beforehand.

Teams were allowed to talk to player agents and "express interest" for a bit leading up to today. Supposedly they weren't supposed to get into exact numbers but poo poo seemed to happen anyways and i don't think the league cares
