Just how many mistakes have you suffered on the way here?

An uncountable number, to be sure.
Baptism just forces open all your nen pores, including your eyes. So you can see it, and being able to perceive it is the first step towards controlling it (although if you don't learn quick you'll die because you're bleeding aura). The alternative is to spend a year meditating until you became of aware of it on your own. It doesn't magically teach you nen skills.

I'm just saying the Gon and Killua went a long-rear end time basically with just ten and zetsu. Marginally enhanced physical abilities could be the tipping point for Terridich winning the war.

Lying to him won't work because there are plenty of other people with Nen and no time to coordinate a cover story. Worse, if someone else attacks him with it, he might spontaneously awaken on his own--now he knows you tried to play him and he's even more dangerous. There are ways around it if you value stopping him more than your own life, but Theta doesn't, and why would she? It sure as hell isn't what she signed up for.

whatever t~nich ends up going for, it probably won't be combat strength. he does not seem to give two shits about fighting, so even if he instantly brought out his hatsu it would probably be some unsavory loving thing involving women's body parts. the beasts can't be directly controlled and won't directly attack the other princes, but they are still vastly stronger than any novice nen user. also, it's not like the beasts popped out of nowhere. i'm not sure if they could ever use more than basic nen, since the pot essentially made them all into unwitting conjurers. the beasts are still feeding off their host's aura, which could have unfortunate repercussions if a prince tries to use their aura directly.

but then again, since the beasts aren't normal conjurations is it possible for them to die? they were born from the princes, rather than being deliberate creations. or maybe they would stick around long enough to kill any non-royalty who killed their host. they are weird as heck and don't seem to follow normal rules.

If it were done on his orders she could probably weasel out of consequences. If he survives missing an arm and a leg that'll shape his nen towards uncrippling himself instead of learning how to do hypertorture.

You're expecting royalty that does stuff like have all the kids murder each other with magic beasts, and particularly one of those royals who so far we know for horribly butchering women for extremely petty reasons, to be reasonable about maiming and/or killing him. I don't think that would go how you're thinking it will.

The problem isn't that she couldn't use the baptism as an excuse to maim him. It's just that she probably, much like Wing, knows that a baptism doesn't have to be like that even if she tells him otherwise. Also it looks like she's afraid to lie in front of the beast and there is the possibility that it will be able to understand that she's intentionally trying to harm him and just kills her if she tries a more violent Baptism. Right now Theta is dancing on pins, she has to be able to subvert his nen education without any open hostility or tipping her hand. Otherwise she'll get killed or worse and than Tssierich will just find another teacher that will likely have less scruples with showing him everything he wants to know.

tbf it's not like the association giving Hunter licenses to monsters is anything new (which I guess is separate from Nen training but I imagine the number of people who earn one and don't go on to learn Nen is p. small).

it's a problem for Theta because she has actual moral scruples, and isn't convinced she can spurn a family of unbelievably wealthy and ruthless royals with impunity. it's also not something she had time to game-theory out in her head beforehand--she signed up for a bodyguard job that just got way more complicated. yeah, Biscuit would probably just take Mr. T's head off if he pressed the issue but she's like one of the top 10 strongest people in the series

She actually is not even signed up for a bodyguard job. She is a member of his private army and has actually made appearances earlier in the arc as an officer reporting on the other princes to Tsrindnich. Given that she is an officer that probably means she has been in his employ for a fairly long time.

Looking through the official release now and the two parts I checked were Salkov telling Theta "don't look at it" rather than "don't look" which makes more sense. A bigger change imo is what she says at the end makes her intentions far clearer.

Fan translation: "I... I have no choice" which I kind of thought sounded like she was saying she had no choice but to answer him but that could just be me.

Official: "I have to put a stop to this, I'm the only one who can" which is much clearer and thematically fits.

Rereading the chapter and she and Salkov have a good idea about teaching Tserriednich his opposite nen-type which is pretty clever.

That's an even more precarious position if they go through with it. A single badly-timed comment or enquiry from any other nen-user, or the Prince just becoming curious about types and wanting a double-check via the wine-glass test or something, could unravel the whole thing.

I forget but does T*nich brutalise/dissect/collect just because he wants to have unique things, or because he is actively fascinated by how they work? Because if it's the latter there is no way he doesn't immediately dive into nen as deeply as he can. :ohdear:

He's not a loving spaceman he's pretty clearly into doing horrible things to living people, he called those women he slaughtered pigs for not knowing Peter Higgs and Nietzsche. As for the wine-glass test they could lie to him about what the various tests are because they're not exactly self-explanatory. You're right though that the biggest danger to them (that they themselves noted) is T*rich speaking to another Prince.

Halkenberg is his sole pal but he's interested in allying with Tubeppa and you can assume at least some information swapping/trading between princes. Or perhaps less information trading and another prince says something they assume T*rich would know e.g. "the wine glass overflowed so much I must be a great enforcer" and T-money is all like "Theta told me that Enforcer's changed the water's colour". Also like you said with Halkenberg out of the contest but his men taken down he might ask T*Rich to help him out.

The cries of the dead are terrible indeed; you should try not to hear them.
The reboot of this show was amazing and no show was really more deserving of a proper continuation/ being done justice. It does the vast majority of things better than the original series/OVAs, but I have to say, throughout the whole thing the quality and use of music seems kinda a lot worse. The volleyball match for example, even with the potato quality animation in comparison, just comes across much better because of it. If when I'm on my deathbed there's another continuation, I hope they really pick up their game on that front.
