There may be some Shaw at C here and there. It's not significantly different than last season, although there's a defintive improvement in Steve Ott no longer being there.

There used to be Desharnais and Eller to take some middling roles, Danault is doing alright (although not 1C alright). Then the rest is a never-ending rotation of AHLers whenever there are injuries.

So the Devils still really need to add another winger to play in the top nine. As of now, lines look something like this:

Hall-Hischier-Henrique
Johansson-Zajac-Palmieri
UFA-Zacha-Wood

Then the fourth should be Brian Boyle with some rotation of Quenneville/Blandisi/UFA.

They will at least be interesting to watch if Schneider has a rebound year. That defense is still a wreck and I'd hope they can sign and trade Kovalchuk to get a top four guy. So it could be something like:

Greene-Severson
???-Santini
Mueller-Lovejoy

I dunno. They're a year or two away from contending but I like how patient Shero is being and the trades he's making.

They could pick up Yakupov for a song and have a line made up entirely of #1 picks.

They still won't make the playoffs, but whatever.

I understand the skepticism around any team like the Leafs that comes up from worst in the league to the playoffs suddenly, but by most metrics people use to judge repeatability the Leafs are either fine or could have been higher in the standings.

Nobody put up unreasonable shooting percentages, they're not relying on a goalie putting up a career season, they're a positive possession team, their one-goal win % was actually poor.

They could absolutely have a down year next year because it's sports and that happens, and I'm not expecting a huge improvement by any means, but I don't think there's a huge risk in believing in this core moving forward.

Depth at wing is ok, goalie is *super* ok, defense is better than mediocre as long as Weber continues to be a monster (and unless Alzner turns out to be a fart) but that center depth will make poo poo difficult.

Montreal has been after a good 1C as long as I can remember, and have never managed to get any. The most significant ones they've had in recent memory were: Desharnais, Plekanek, Scott Gomez, Saku Koivu, and pre-coke Mike Ribeiro. You had some they were hopeful for like Higgins and so on, but by then I don't think I can actually remember watching Hockey enough to find anyone.

That's just some seriously :stare: center depth. Granted, I've been spoiled by several years of having four #1/2 centers in our top-6, but still. Yeesh.

Turgeon left in 1996 I think. That's the last time they had good center depth from what I can understand, but I was 8 years old at the time and didn't really know what was going on.

I think Backstrom, Kuznetsov, Ovechkin, and Holtby is still enough to get that team into the playoffs but this off season the Caps have lost two top nine forwards and three top six defensemen. That's rough.

Apparently JR has talked to five different teams about trading for a 3c, so I guess that's the route he's more likely to go than signing a UFA.

He must be pretty confident Cullen is coming back because I've heard nothing about them looking for a 4c.

could also just rely on tweener depth for 4C. I wonder who will wind up as the 3C, haven't really given any thought to who we could get via trade (and what we'd have to give up). Hopefully we can find another undervalued guy that has decent IQ and unimpressive production stats. What's Lee Stempniak up to these days?

I'm sure the players want to win. But I look at that roster and at the moves management has made in the last five years and I get real dubious like about how this team views the concept of 'winning.'

The biggest thing to watch for with the Leafs this coming season (imo anyways) is injuries. they were one of the top-fiveish healthiest teams in the league last year in turns of man games lost, and the players that missed time weren't core pieces

Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Rielly, Zaitsev, Gardiner, and JVR missed a combined 12 games all of last season, which is insane

Winnipeg was the 2nd youngest team in the league last year and had the 2nd most man games lost to injury. Chicago on the other hand is old as gently caress, and they happened to be one of the healthiest teams in the league

I'm sure age is a variable that pulls some weight when it comes to health and games lost, but it's mostly just dumb luck

That's true, but in fairness Marner was dealing with mono for two months and was visibly affected for months after, and Rielly played with a high ankle sprain from January onward, so it's not like the whole team was playing 100% all year.

He's basically said that that's the only route he's going to take for a 3C. There's really no one worth looking at in the free agent market, anyway.

I'd look for Rowney getting a shot at 4C. He's played center up through the AHL so playing 4th line minutes wouldn't be that much of a stretch as long as he can win a faceoff. Or just find a plug if Cullen doesn't come back.

Was about the say just that, they are still very young and bouncy and elastic and probably coached better in the physical department than any other previous generation of young players so unless for lovely luck of poo poo (like McDavid had) it is reasonable to figure they are not going to lose devastating man games to injury the next season either. At least their group has not developed any sort of pattern for that even in juniors AFAIK.

Of course now that I wrote that, Matthews and Marner will get dropped during the first dozen games.

I see a decent draft and acceptable signings with an eye to improve the PP, which has been a tire fire for several years. The PK is a question mark with no more Burrows/Hansen. Still, there is no clear core to rebuild around unless Horvat (who is still unsigned), Boeser, Goldobin and Dahlen or some combination thereof actually turn into something.

Otherwise I see repetition of calls to trade Tanev everywhere, which seems really stupid to me as he will still be worth a lot in three years if this team actually starts turning into a rebuilt franchise.
