Here's some data about inequality. Despite inequality existing in Sweden, Sweden is actually one of the most equal countries. We were discussing the education system in the United States, which is an extraordinarily unequal country, to a degree that if you are a Swedish citizen, you probably don't even begin to comprehend how shocking the inequality truly is here. I've had had over a dozen jobs over the course of twenty years and literally every HR boss in every company I've worked at has been an overweight forty something woman with a bad haircut and dye job who speaks in a in the most overtly chipper yet hollow customer servicey voice possible. I have never seen any of these women have a genuine social interaction with a coworker. If I ever saw one of them on a date somewhere it would probably weird me out more than when I was a kid and and I'd run into one of my teachers at the supermarket. Edit: And they all have this weird sorta dark, about to snap, vibe around them. It's hard to explain. Boris Galerkin posted:This is from a few pages back but I just wanted to respond to this now that I'm at a proper computer You're absolutely right. And that's why Common Core provides a number of approaches, from the conceptually very simple to the more elegant but conceptually difficult. Kids can not only use a variety of approaches, but what approach they use (and whether they do it right) also gives teachers a better understanding of where each child has a particular conceptual problem so that they can address it. The problem is that parents and a lot of teachers only see "those weird problems" (which can also stem from poor implementations), so they grumble about kids learning the number line, or adding two and then six to eight to get sixteen "instead of just knowing that eight and eight is sixteen" instead of recognizing that the number line is how a lot of them do more complicated mental math. So no, I'm not saying that everyone learning factoring needs to learn it the way I did. I'm saying -- and Common Core math is saying -- that it's one tool to approach the problem among many, and that the more mental tools we provide to children the better their understanding of the material.
