In a private meeting, Nixon promised the Shah whatever he wanted short of nuclear weapons and the blowback from that has helped shape US policy in the middle east ever since. Just a thought.

In a potentially massively important move, the EU regulatory body has decided that Google has monopoly power in the realm of search engines and will be regulated as a legal monopoly. That means fines for every time Google promotes its own products in Google searches over others, mandatory public disclosure, Google can't use Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) for its EU sites, and Google can't effectively pressure other sites into using non-google features like AMP, HTML5, abandoning flash, adsense, or punishing sites that try to game the algorithm with hidden SEO work. The U.S. government disagreed in 2013, but kept the door open to make a final decision later. Could be enormous changes, good and bad, if the U.S. ever decides to officially weigh in permanently.

OddObserver posted:You know, I was under impression that knowingly buying stolen property was some sort of a crime? So why there doesn't seem to be any report of someone facing criminal charges? Proving knowledge is the hardest thing any prosecutor has to do. This is why DOJ doesn't bring charges on someone unless it is basically a slam-dunk. I have mixed feelings on how useful this is for us as a society. You could get a whole lot more people caught in the net if you lower the bar, but the rich fucks would likely still get away with just paying a fine.

Also, 3 million dollars is pocket change to them so it's not even a meaningful fine to them. Basically just a slap on the wrist.
