‘‘Nothing has represented them more: a hagiographical musical where they can pretend to be intersectional and pretend to be multicultural,’’ said Felix Biederman, a co-host, on the second episode of the show. ‘‘They have no policy. They’re all cultural signifiers.’’

It's directly from an episode.

I don't think there's anything fundamentally wrong with using the memory of Bush and Reagan as a cudgel to remind the GOP how they'd fallen, as long as you remember in your heart of hearts that they were giant pieces of poo poo that are responsible for the hosed up state of the US.
Yeah, how far they've fallen from what? If Trump has a heart attack and dies tonight, he'll have been the best Republican president of my lifetime.

I grew up in Indiana with horrible almost non-existent public transit and now I live in the Tokyo area which has a public transit system better than pretty much anywhere. After living here for a few years if the train is like 5 minutes late it pisses me off. Conditioning is a hell of a thing

Antti posted:

The problem with that is that former GOP Presidents become beatified and emptied of any meaning or history. Reagan is Saint Ron, who was tough on illegal immigration, cut taxes and kept the budget balanced. In 20 years, when GOP orthodoxy has shifted once again, Saint Ron will have always stood for intervening in the Second Great Cyber-Crusade on Russia's side and putting sexual deviants in re-education camps.
Ultimately the problem is that people obscure politicians' actual policy--and by extension, what politics even means--in favour of statements. I've already seen several of these thinkypieces about how Republicans should remember Reagan's origins as a New Deal Democrat, blah blah blah.

Hell, I just recently listened to an old episode where Amber and Matt were discussing how it doesn't matter what views a politician expresses publicly or privately, but the coalition of interests to whom they owe their position.
