Thanks Ants posted:windows is poo poo at high dpi i know it's not really fair to laugh at but our new high spec laptop is a lenobo P50 with a 4K screen running Win7. the start menu is the size of a postage stamp. that is the menu, when opened, not just the button itself.

Thanks Ants posted:windows is poo poo at high dpi Even worse if you have one low dpi and one high dpi monitor. The mouse speed does not scale properly. Pointer size also feels off. Most important applications, including adobe stuff, do not even loving support it yet. Software that does support it gently caress up when a window is spanning both monitors.

X11 has always had variable dpi, since forever, and unlike windows, people actually used it. back in the 90s it was very common for X11 displays to be 80, 96, or 100 dpi. like, all three possibilities were almost equally common. so every gui toolkit ever written, from the very beginning, has had substantial support for scalable UI the result is that when i got a retina macbook a couple years ago pretty much all gui software worked fine ootb with no fiddling around the horrible, horrible exception was web browsers. firefox worked with some fiddling. chrome never worked.
