The implied setting (as in, what comes out from just the rules and the descriptions themselves) suggests bands of adventurers roaming the largely unexplored wilderness, slaying all manner of random-rear end dungeon denizens, taking their loot, and trying to become rich enough to eventually become land-owners. There's a certain libertarian mentality to bootstrapping your way to success in a virgin territory without the oversight of a larger government, especially when compared to the implied politics of a game like, say, Shadowrun. It's also the case that Gygax was literally a member of the Libertarian Party.
