When I read Brave New World in high school, I thought the moral challenge was to acknowledge that there are downsides to poetry and that the society depicted really does have a lot going for it. But no, turns out Huxley thought ubiquitous birth control and hella good drugs were unequivocally bad.

When I do mental math, I do something pretty similar, and I was taught math long before common core was a thing. Seems overly complicated for working something out on paper though.
