Moist von Lipwig posted:Hell, Marx envisioned Communism as an eventual evolution out of capitalism once the means of production had become so efficient that humans weren't needed to operate them. People imagine it as a bunch of factory workers siezing cotton mills but that's not what Marx had in mind. He knew technological advances would eventually make it unnecessary for most people to work. too bad automation is just gonna make it unnecessary for the working class to continue living

I'd prefer full socialism but whatever moves the needle towards that works for me atm. obviously the libertarian types need no excuse but the problem is UBI can give the non-libertarian and nominal liberal side a reason to agree with the libertarians. UBI is a great concept but it's one of the few things we actually should be fairly pragmatic and careful on because there's probably a lot that needs to come first.

PayingForTheView posted:I thought the critism of the existence of ubi making prices for rent and things much higher was stupid since that's the same argument for not upping the minimum wage to a living one (which they endorse). Neither of these things are wrong. Minimum wage increases without worker protections, and UBI without rent control will absolutely cause issues. When the folks on chapo endorse these things, you have to keep in mind their other stated positions. Thinking about it, I don't think they've even mentioned the living wage thing beyond "Hillary not being able to support it in simple terms is bad campaigning and uninspiring". I'd love an episode about it, because there are definitely issues with the minimum wage movement that should be addressed. Famethrowa fucked around with this message at 17:22 on Jul 11, 2017 |

It's symptomatic of how dead socialism is that all the left can do is propose these stopgap measures to curb the worst of capitalism, and half of them are probably bad for the working class long term. It's a poison that comes from working with the right over a long time, and internalizing their worldview. There are practically no actual socialist political parties in the world.

You can cooperate with capitalism and lose your soul, or you can refuse, and be crushed. The only way forward is international solidarity, workers organizing and striking across borders and ethnic/religious/cultural lines. Otherwise capitalism will continue to divide and isolate workers, the way it has successfully done

When/if we have full automation of manual work, unless the working class worldwide has seized power, the rich absolutely will murder hundreds of millions of people rather than financially support them

Don't conflate the lovely political situation in the US with the rest of the world, plenty of places have active socialist or left wing parties that are doing well or are actually in government. Electoral politics in the US is just totally hosed because of how much money is sloshing around in it, which is why Americans need to be looking at direct action and soon, imo.

There was this portuguese centre-right paper that last sunday had a piece on how "For some reason ,we don't have a populist uprising! And analysts are somehow baffled by this!" despite ignoring the part where we have a coalition between the socialist party, the communist party and a leftist-libertarian party for quite a few years. Well that and 50 years of Salazar combined with an aging population that can recall how it was like during so. It makes American Centrist coverage look at least Aware that people Do Like Socialism.

Saying that, many of those nominally socialist, centre-left or left wing parties are soft social democrats or eurocommunists that became heavily compromised by the neoliberal concensus throughout the 90s and 00s. The problem with being in power is that you become increasingly willing to surrender your principles to remain in power.
