when human communities make human sacrifices, they have a distinct paradoxical tendency to heighten the social status of the sacrificed, often giving them special ritual garments and special meals or treatment or stuff before they get sacrificed. In the way that the most famous human sacrifice, done in the non-sacrificial christian religion, was done (shameful crucifixion after ritual roman mockery), the garments of mockery given to the condemned were literally transformed by ritual. no modern state would give a crown of thorns to anyone executed anymore, the symbolism would be too bad

a bit of both. the bay area has a lot to offer. if you like the outdoors, there are tons of beautiful open spaces and national parks. mountains, beaches, desert, whatever environment you want is at most a couple hours drive. lots of different cultures means the food is great, and there's a huge restaurant scene, you can go to a new one every single day if you want. if you prefer sports or artistic performances, sf has everything you want, plus there's oakland and san jose too. weather is nearly always great, you can grow anything in your garden. if you like to talk about tech stuff and meet other interesting people in the industry, just go to any bar and talk to someone, chances are they work in tech.

the problem is the cost of living. there are lots of cool places in the bay area but you aren't living in one of those for any reasonable amount of money. instead you're somewhere like suburban cupertino or the sunnyvale hellscape. a house starts at a million dollars and daycare costs are hosed so don't think about trying to raise a family or anything human and normal like that. so to some extent, people come here to work, then leave when their priorities change.

other people are actually FROM here, so because of prop 13 they live in their family's house that their grandparents bought for $50k after ww2. the house is now worth $1.5 million but property tax is still assessed at $50k. life is just fine here for the landowning class

I hated the bay area. I lived in south bay and it was a garbage stripmall. San Francisco is nicer but literally every positive aspect of it is even better in Seattle.

I think you're doing the right thing but get that poo poo on your resume and bounce in a couple of years.

the south bay is a garbage stripmall because the residents want it to be that way. there's plenty of opportunity for denser development, but the people who live there and control the local governments won't allow it. they want the place just like it was in 1960, and they want to keep their multi-million dollar housing values. basically, hosed by boomers again

i have also lived in san diego and los angeles. compared to the bay area, SD was more fun and LA was more interesting, but they have their drawbacks too (in LA it's the traffic and endless sprawl, in SD it's the republicans)

i forgot probably the most important feature for lmo: the bay area is extremely friendly to gay and trans people. if you're LGBT here then you have a community and it is socially unacceptable for anyone to harass you because of your identity

the Bay Area is a shithole and I wish I could move away from here. but I also own a nice house in a nice neighborhood and have a short commute and get paid a lot. so basically I live here now and I'm voting for all of those things that make jk3000 angry. also ignore that stuff about raising a family. if you have at least one tech salary in your household you'll be fine. if you don't, welp

Bay area weather is determined by how much hills and land separate you from the ocean, south bay has a lot of hilly terrain west of it so it can get pretty warm

This is also the warmest its been since probably around this time last year

But yeah south bay mostly sucks. It's close to work and that's it. There's a lot of variety across the bay area tho so if you hate it there you can move 10 miles to something different. For example I'm in rural san mateo county and it owns, I used to live in Berkeley for a while and that owns too but in different ways

yeah if we'd had time to get out here before house hunting maybe we could have done better but the lovely relocation vendor had no corporate housing that would allow our dogs so we had to rent a house completely by remote. definitely gonna upgrade next year. once my wife finds a job we'll be able to afford whatever.

epic thissery, p much the whole area has long graduated from :airquote: tolerance :airquote: to genuinely not caring one way or the other

lmo i suggest you do the following as soon as possible:

- go to santa cruz, wander around
- go to big basin, check out the trees
- go to san francisco, climb up some hills for nice views, then rent a bike and ride it across the golden gate bridge to sausalito. take the ferry back

if you're not impressed then you're not paying attention.

the housing situation requires compromises, like i said before you moved here. you have dogs, plural, including at least one pit bull

oh also wrt south bay sucking, despite being mostly suburb/stripmall hell its got some cool poo poo but you gotta go put some effort in finding it, e.g. i recommend going to weird stuff warehouse sometime, and madras does takeout so u can skip the wait even if its a busy time, and lick observatory on mt hamilton is a kewl drive, and original gravity in sj is probably my fav bar, and mission peak is great but can be rough on your knees going back down, and los altos has a great homebrew shop

having grown up in the midwest a big difference here is how the weather is super consistent. even during the winter when it rains, the rain is super predictable (i.e. forecasts are reasonably accurate) and tends to run in short cycles (like it''ll rain for 2-3 days and then nothing for a week or three before the next couple days of rain)

one thing that is annoying with a 8 million population metro area is once anything gets popular itll start to turn into kind of a mess, e.g. big basin can get pretty wacky on weekends depending on the time of year and you gotta book campsites waaay ahead of time, tho neighboring 'little basin' opened recently and its not too difficult to book yet. meanwhile any of the tier 2 parks surrounding it like butano SP, pescadero creek county park, portola redwoods SP, will be mostly empty even during peak weekends with pretty much the same stuff that big basin has

also some areas will have weekend traffic thats equivalent to rush hour because everyones goin out and doin stuff unlike in the midwest lol, for example traffic along i-80 to/from tahoe in the winter is pretty notorious

if you do want to get ur hike on and would like something quiet that just takes a couple hours i recommend going to russian ridge OSP and taking the trail up mindego hill. at the top on a clear day u can see all the way to monterey. also:
- dont forget sunscreen cuz the sun is more intense here for whatever reason (not downwind of as much pollution? idk)
- learn what the local poison oak looks like cuz its real common

other various stuff in the surrounding area that isnt necessarily gonna be on any lists:
- if you get pizzas from cheese board you are absolutely required to go out and sit in the median to eat it
- devils canyon brewery in san carlos has an open night on fridays where a bunch of food trucks show up and everyone hangs out. at some point it had started getting too popular but i went again recently and they expanded the space and added a bunch of seating and its cool again
- in addition to mt hamilton mentioned above you can also drive (or bike) up mt diablo in far east bay or mt tam in north bay and they all have great views

drive to the top of Mt. Diablo on a clear day, is my advice

I grew up in central CA, and it's horrible and flat and brown in all directions, and nothing grows unless you bring water from outside, and I was so anxious to live anywhere else in the world that I drove five days to Madison when invited

but to me, the south bay sprawl is even worse. it's just endless miles of featureless low-rise buildings stretching out tracklessly in all directions like an effigy of the silicon valley's soul

I mostly punt if I can. since I'm so junior (3yrs) I feel like thats still ok.

have any yall used the Glassdoor salary estimator? is it at all close? it says I should be making 10-20% more depending on if I use my inflated job title or the one I'm probably supposed to have.

yes i've found glassdoor to be accurate unless you're applying to a huge name company with many different studios/teams all with different specialised roles.
