canis minor posted:Hard to say really - for Macmaster/Hay I'd say Hook, but then Love & Reason has phenomenal Thograinn Thograinn, though I'd say Hook fits more into your criteria (and MacMaster does her own irish music gig, though I'm fed up with irish music for a while having been listening to Enya for far too long); in case of Hidden Orchestra it's definitelly Night Walks - there's such a plethora of different intstruments and remixing going around, every song is different, opposed with Archipelago, which feels a bit monothematic. I listened to both Night Walks and Dawn Chorus, I really enjoyed both! And yeah, the variety of Night Walks was kind of surprising, yet it still felt cohesive overall. The song "Stammer" around 4 mins was particularly surprising; it caught me off guard while I was doing other things and I found myself head nodding to it. Still haven't listened to Archipelago yet, but will ASAP. Oh gently caress me dude, Balmorhea is it (notably the song "To the Order of Night")! Thank you much! Though really, everything you've recommended stroked my fancy . Any particular soundtrack/album by Jeff Beal you enjoy? Thanks again!

Glad you liked them (especially given that, after recommending Hidden Orchestra, I've listened to the songs you posted from Braids and thought to myself "why did I recommend this, they don't sound nothing alike") I'm most familiar with Carnivale OST (as I was a fan of the show; music from that soundtrack is supposed to be contemporary to American great depression) and of the stuff he did on the House of Cards (which is pretty climatic as well) so I can recommend these, but at cursory glance, given that they're quite spanned apart in his output, they sound similar (or at least follow same patterns). canis minor fucked around with this message at 19:05 on Jul 13, 2017 |

I've started playing in a little for-funsies punk trio with a very gravelly/shouty singer, and I'm looking for simplistic punk songs with those kinds of vocals that could be covered by three people with rudimentary skills. To give you an idea, his voice sounds a lot like this dude's, albeit in a somewhat lower register: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0l68I76ckSg So far we've been playing stripped down versions of stuff like the above, Stiff Little Fingers ("At the Edge," "Nobody's Hero"), The Business ("Suburban Rebels"), and Minor Threat ("Minor Threat"). So there's a tendency toward classic 70s/80s stuff but contemporary pop punk is OK too. I don't know a lot about Oi! music but I think there might be some fertile territory there. And I do emphasize that simpler is better, because we suck. Thanks!

I know Minor Threat covered them at some point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwJCUn0ndwA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLp1iFquAgY Minor Threat's cover: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAMVGvCuV3I

So this might be a bit difficult because I'm looking for something a little weird, but if anyone can point me toward some music similar to these few tracks I'd love the help, specifically the DOOM track. I thought for a long time that I didn't like hip hop but I found Dälek and it turns out I just dislike tracks that aren't drenched in noise and reverb. Dälek are also great because MC Dälek isn't (at least obviously) a raging misogynist and his lyrics are amazing, so that's also a big plus.

Would've been better if you mentioned how all rap is bitches, blunts, and bling. Also nobody who listens to hip hop actually considers dalek hip hop. But otherwise that's a pretty good fake post.

Hey y'all I'm wondering if a thread exists for a genre, but I don't know what the genre actually is called: basically electronic music that doesn't have a super-fast house tempo, so like the shared space between hip-hop and edm and r&b. What I'm specifically looking for is slow thrumming bass with pretty vocals or other music on top. Examples include Walked Away (feat. Y.A.S.) - OBESØN, Y.A.S.; Orientness (Minorstep Remix) - Lqd Hrmny; Mazde - Forest of Gold; Miles to Go - Stateless (all available on Spotify if someone is cool and bored enough to reference) Is there a thread for this? I think of the genre as "Soundtrack to Really Good Sex"

I loved her Zelda covers (looks like I even have it added to my library). I was waiting for her original material, but then just kind of fell out of touch, thank you for reminding me of her! I'm looking for some quirky, maybe bittersweet, retro-inspired instrumental synth music. For lack of better comparison, something like the Postal Service but without the vocals. Or maybe something like what you'd hear on the Life Aquatic soundtrack. Any ideas?

the other guy from the postal service records as dntel, and also used to be in a similar group called figurine so i'd say start there. try caribou/manitoba/daphni and the four tet record rounds. you might also like m83 or mum or broadcast but they all use vocals to varying degrees. all the other stuff i would recommend isnt very twee but if you want me to talk about it i can

Does anyone have any recommendations for 70s type pop rock with a female lead singer along the lines of the Kiki Dee Band or Buckingham-Nicks era Fleetwood Mac? (Must exclude Heart pre-emptively since I'm already familiar with them.)

They're not a 70s band, more a throwback band, but check out Angel'in Heavy Syrup from Japan. They have four albums, just titled I-IV, and each one is better than the previous one, so start at IV and work backwards.

I'm looking for primitive, lo fi synth stuff, in the vein of 80s Maurizio Bianchi. Some Will Over Matter material is kind of like this, and so is this dude https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKXUSOLp-KI, but I haven't heard much else that's similar. I'm already aware of some of the 80s italian noise/PE guys who were influenced by M.B. but I'm not really looking for straight up noise here.

Alternatively, if anyone's familiar with the Age of Empires 2 soundtracks and can recommend music similar to that, that would be awesome. Not entirely sure what you would call that genre.
