I feel like this is one of those situations where once it's been done the first time then it just becomes an accepted thing you can do

Well I mean, they can also be homophobes (see: all the whinging about Bill's sexuality being shoved done throats because we happened to see her fancy one girl and then have a couple of dates with another despite relationship stuff having been constantly present with Rose, Amy, Clara, having met Donna on her friggin wedding day) so that just seemed like a good way to group them (and any racists that would have been upset by a PoC Doctor) together

What's happened as it relates to television and entertainment is that people generally accepted the ghettoization of producing content for specific minority audiences with BET, Lifetime Movies of the Week, etc, under the justification that the "mainstream" material that lives outside the ghetto was frequently over-committed to specific profiling biases (whites over poc, men over women, etc.) The takeaway from that argument is that people inside those profiles decided that they had ownership of that content. It was decided that this stuff that isn't for you is "their" entertainment, and this stuff is "your" entertainment, and that pivoting to include more minorities is somehow taking possession from them. They feel that'd be as wrong as airing a show all about men on the womens channel.

I admit I'm somewhat sympathetic if just because the ghettoization of content hasn't stopped in the meantime. But I'm certainly not mad enough to yell for boycotts or sign online petitions over anything. Doctor Who is sort of a weird territory anyway because it somehow managed to codify certain gender biases while still under a woman showrunner. I guess the 1950s will do that to you.

Perhaps people who are victims of systemic oppression can benefit both from having media directly controlled by and created for them as well as representation in mainstream stories.

I can only speak for my father, but I do recall him saying that he doesn't really care about that kind of thing so long as the stories are entertaining.

Like myself, he only bothers with politics at all when elections are happening. I genuinely don't think he sees anything intrinsically political about stuff like casting decisions on television programmes because to him the only issue that really matters is the number at the bottom of his tax bill every month.

You know, every time there's a new Doctor/companion/showrunner, I always think that maybe I'll stop watching. Then BBC announces a name, and with the name comes a face, and I internalize the fact that the show I love is about to show me something new, and I get so drat hype for my silly British children's space show it's pathetic.

I know that, in the future, I'm probably going to have conversations about The Doctor's Gender, and I guess I'll have to decide where I stand on the subject, but right now I'm just watching Whittaker take off her hood over and over again, a big stupid grin on my face, just like I've done with every new Doctor and Companion from Smith onwards, because YAY NEW DOCTOR WHO!

Now I have to wait for it

Personally, I'm so right-wing my Lib Dem membership card has a picture of William Gladstone on it, but Doctor Who remains my favourite programme. :v:

(My membership cards for the other parties don't have pictures on them; both the Labour and Conservative ones are pretty boring - they're just plain card with the party name and my name on them - and I don't think either of the local Northern Ireland ones I'm a member of even sent me a card.)

Conservatives are really bad at understanding that stories have morals and allegories designed to make us compare those stories to the real world and comment on current events, mostly because they lack things like critical thinking or empathy.

Gonna break out my crystal ball for a minute here.

So when we last saw the Doctor he's fending off the impending regeneration. He's had enough, he finds the whole thing ridiculous. So the Tardis does what she usually does and takes the Doctor to where he most needs to be. Back to his original self, who appears to be undergoing an identical personal crisis. Presumably over the course of the Christmas special the Doctor's personal character arc is going to be about accepting change through regeneration as a natural part of the Time Lord life experience, and by the end the Capaldi Doctor's attitude is going to be "Well if I'm going to change, let's make it a big one!"

There's been a bunch of efforts lately to elevate women in properties that were predominantly watched by men, this Doctor and Rey from Star Wars being the two most notable in the sci-fi genre.

I thought Rey was the result of a (welcome, but) new-fangled decision to give Star Wars a female hero for the longest time, but then I remembered Leia is already shooting Stormtroopers with a laser gun long before Luke or Han ever appear onscreen, and our Bloke Brains just write over it somehow.

Fun fact: Leia's brief interaction with Rey is the only time she ever interacts with another named female character in any of the movies, so Star Wars passes the Bechdel test by default. :v:

I actually like the idea that Twelve DID regenerate in the snow, but because of that device where Bill saw herself as her own self-image instead of all Cyberised, that we see Capaldi through most of the Xmas special, maybe with One doing his usual "Hmmmm, what was that? 'Old man' you say, no, no..." shtick from time to time when the Doctor refers to themself as a dude until the reveal.

Not how it works. The test has 3 criteria.
1. Piece must have at least 2 named, speaking female characters who,
2. speak to one another about,
3. somthing other than a man.

I don't believe it's ideal, and will breed resentment from people who have been told "well entertainment has been dominated by people who look like you for the past four generations, so now your generation has to learn to sit it out and share", and that the alternative should be that everything is diverse and inviting, but that's just an argument that's not going to be had here.

I say this as someone who tuned into RTD-Who going "oh god, the Queer As Folk guy" because I actually watched QAF (admittedly the early US adaption when it was still reading UK scripts) just to see some sort of TV that I could identify with, and wound up seeing a collection of stereotypes and cringe-worthy moments (this seems to be an RTD staple, but I didn't recognize it at the time). That was before gay people were integrated into so many programs just as a natural matter, which I feel is truly progressive.

Leia got to do less and less over the course of the original trilogy, unfortunately, going from "gently caress your lovely rescue, I'm taking over" to ~emotional connection with teddy bears~*. Tanya Huff (I think) wrote an essay about it, not sure if it's online, though.

I really want the regeneration to happen while Twelve is in the middle of saving Gallifrey in Day of the Doctor so Thirteen will have participated in the 50th Anniversary story. Also to enrage the nerds even more.

I kind of hope that we'd get to see 10, 11 & War show up to recruit both One and Twelve for that mission. Then I remember that John Hurt's no longer with us. :smith:
