I've been away for the weekend, and only just heard the news - it's great! I'm more concerned about Chibnall as showrunner than a time-travelling demi-immortal space wizard happening to incidently own some ovaries, and Etheric Beam Locators in this incarnation.

Incredibly, incredibly exciting news. I can't wait to see what she'll do with the role. I'll probably have to check out Attack the Block while waiting.

I'm so glad Chibnall and the BBC finally decided to just do it, this time it really felt like it was now or never. The casting pool for future Doctors has just doubled!

So when we last saw the Doctor he's fending off the impending regeneration. He's had enough, he finds the whole thing ridiculous. So the Tardis does what she usually does and takes the Doctor to where he most needs to be. Back to his original self, who appears to be undergoing an identical personal crisis. Presumably over the course of the Christmas special the Doctor's personal character arc is going to be about accepting change through regeneration as a natural part of the Time Lord life experience, and by the end the Capaldi Doctor's attitude is going to be "Well if I'm going to change, let's make it a big one!"

Nah, it's because of Twelve wasting all that regeneration energy.

I wonder how much of wanting "traditional Who" is a British thing.

In the United States, no one "grew up" watching the show, like it wasn't something that young boys would have acted out as a space opera. It wasn't Star Wars for us, where it was a common part of boys childhood vocabulary. In the United States, most of the fans started with the revival, and most of them were the type of people who would have been interested in a niche, hard to watch TV series...meaning they are probably pretty open minded in general.

Like, in the US, Doctor Who fans are at least 80% "tumblr demographic", but I don't think that is true in Great Britain.

Do we suppose now that the reports of the BBC wanting a David Tennant type were deliberate misdirection? It is interesting to speculate that they're true but Chibnall said, "No, I would like to cast a female Doctor," and got his way. That would suggest he has considerable pull and that the Corporation has confidence in him. Of course, it's more probably that the former is true and we all just bought into it because it was so convincing.

I'm always quite surprised to see 51% of the population described as a minority tbh. It's also weird to see all those men claiming doctor who as their own - Families watch doctor who in the U.K. and the female to male viewership always gets distorted online, because 8 year old girls don't generally get violently angry on the internet and spew up hate or OCD statistics all over it.

I wish the haters would just admit "yes, I'm a huge sexist and I hate it when women are in things I like" instead of blustering around acting like the character of the Doctor has ever hinged on "having a space dick" in the past.

I will admit I am immensely sceptical about their decision, even though I will probably be told I am a sexist rear end in a top hat for it.
But for me, and probably a lot of other people who are not immediately huge fans of the idea, the main point is something else. I let myself get immensely immersed into shows or movies or books I like and soak up the world and "facts" as they are. And as such I have been "trained" to expect the Dr. to be a man, simply because that is what is always the case. Or was, I should say.

I.e. an existing constant that is deeply rooted in the shows fundamental characteristics suddenly gets changed.
And humans don't like change in what they are used to in many cases.

Plus they have changed a lot in the last few seasons, first they pander to the American audience, then they make the master a woman, and if you ask me, the last season had too many scary and earnest episodes. When was the last time there was a lighthearted episode with cheesy aliens kinda like those fat blobs?
So maybe it is just a little too much change for some people lately, which, however, doesn't justify the meltdowns exhibited by some nutcases.

That said I'll keep an open mind, but I really hope they don't make it a big deal in the show.

They started dropping completely unsubtle hints about this at least five years ago, starting with the young Melody regenerating into a black woman. People weren't speculating hard about a female or minority Doctor just for funsies, it was because they had been dropping massive anvil-sized hints that they were going in this direction. Anyone who didn't see this coming sooner or later either isn't actually watching the show, or they are so stupid it's unreal.

There's a significant crossover with comic book readers, which are much the same way. It's easy for people who like superhero fiction to get into Who, and superheroes declined in the 70s/80s but had a big revival in the 90s at the same time media was trying it's hardest to follow more socially liberal morals. X-Men owned the decade from the Jim Lee comics of the early 90s through a cartoon and the first film, and that's a property that long had political strawmen that exist to point out that many people who cling to tradition are simply closed minded xenophobes.

Batman's films sucked, but animated series had had a lasting impact on fans and came on right after Power Rangers, which itself was in it's preachiest years because Haim Saban is a big Clintonite (and also because the show needed to show Joe Lieberman et al that it was teaching kids something other than violence).

The show's fundamental characteristic is that the Doctor changes, not that he has a dick. He's been thirteen vastly different people over its fifty years already. Change is in the DNA of the show

I'm really, genuinely happy over this. Still have deep reservations about Chibnall given his previous work on the show, but at the same time I'm sick enough of the Moffat style to long for something different.

Conspiracy theory - Moffat laid the groundwork for a female Doctor in order to pressure his successor into doing it, because he wanted it to happen, but he didn't want to be the one to have to weather the storm.

Well, Chibnall himself said that he's presented a five-year plan for Who and it's pretty ambitious, which already suggests that they have faith in him.

As for the casting, I don't know how much of that was legitimate reports and how much was just Internet spitballing because everyone's A) hungry for spoilers and B) always ready to poo poo on something two seconds after it's announced. Chibnall only just started working on Who maybe a month and a half ago after taking a break following Broadchurch.
