So I'm in the 4th season of BSG for the first time. What was the reaction at the end of season 3 when the 4 were revealed? I don't know how I feel about it. Frankly, it just seems really out of nowhere and slapdash. I'm now watching episode 6 after Cally's last episode.

I think that was the point where people had to admit that the show was clearly being made up as they went along

Most maybe but in this day and age the network wants a hard plan of where a show is going to go. The start and end are usually fixed, the road between is pretty flexibile though.

Ok one last Tucker quote because it's great, but naturally couldn't find a way to shoehorn it in to the faux outrage.

quote:

Malcolm Tucker: It's time for you to step up Ollie. What's that film that you love?
Ollie: What film?
Malcolm: The one about the loving hairdresser, the space hairdresser and the cowboy. The guy, he's got a tin foil pal and a pedal bin. His father's a robot and he's loving hosed his sister. Lego! They're all made of loving Lego.
Ollie: Star Wars?
Malcolm: That's the one, right. It's like that, okay? Where you loving kill all the bad guys, and you'll be able to blow up the big...
Ollie: Death Star.
Malcolm: The Death Star thing. Then you can go and live happily ever after on the planet of the teddy bears.
Ollie: They're Ewoks, they're Ewoks. It's a fantastic analogy, well done.

Yeah. It just comes out of nowhere and really fucks up the characterization of numerous characters. I'm just really surprised BSG gets mentioned in the same breath as other premiere shows.

When Monica thinks Chandler is watching shark porn it was actually just the Discovery Channel. Today it would be actual shark porn from the internet. And they would be building motorcycles on the Discovery Channel.

Babylon 5 legitimately might have been plotted out as a rough outline of it's entire story, possibly with even minor story beats planned out, but even that just shows you the realities of time: Some actors left, there was questions about renewal....a planned outline of a long running tv series is the same as any other plan, it really only survives the first 5 minutes of execution and then you have to start winging some things.

Half the posters in this forum have been made up. This website is a goddamn ghost town.
The outline for Babylon 5 is very different than where the show went. It's just that you had one guy writing it, so he had a lot of control over the changes and kept things feeling natural.

Just the fact that people took "[the Cylons] have a plan" to mean that the writers have some secret master plan is baffling to me.

But I also liked the show all the way to the end and liked the ending, so what the hell do I know.

BSG really sucks in retrospect. It will only be notable in the future for kicking off the writers' strike with the webisode controversy.

Wasn't the plan for a long time to make the baker lady be the mother?
Also wasn't it a thing where the second or third episode revealed the mother's name and nobody ever realized it or the creators still tried acting coy about it

I mean, the BSG writers had a plan too, they always knew they were gonna get to Earth. That's the plot of BSG.

And they were gonna troll conservatives about politics.

I'll never forget the rant that someone on this forum went one about how BSG is full of "plot holes" because the characters keep talking "about Iraq and Afghanistan even though they don't exist in the setting".

I think that if the first episode literally says that the bad guys have a plan, it's not actually ridiculous to expect that the writers know what that plan is. Not episode by episode, but at least what the bad guy's goal is and generally what their tactics to obtain that goal will be.

I guess if you've never watched a show before where the villain claimed to have a master plan that clearly made no sense and was made up on an episode by episode bases.

It's the same deal with LOST. If you thought it was ever gonna fit together and make sense, you were watching a different show than me.
