That just seems incredibly rude to me. I'd understand if you need an object like a phone to focus on to be able to participate in a conversation like I do in face to face interactions (for multiplayer video games the device itself fills that function for me), but for most other cases? You've been invited to participate. That's what you should do.

If you're in a queue or a loading screen, suspending the chat and coming back to it shouldn't be an issue.

I just wonder what important things you'd possibly be missing in that scenario. I dunno. Maybe my priorities are different. But that just doesn't feel like a big deal. You're effectively having everything put on mute for a little bit.

If you're taking 30 seconds to check facebook or text someone back, your world will not end that you didn't hear the 12 year old in the voice chat say gently caress or whatever.

I don't mind the dropping voice chat thing as long as they do a good job automatically reconnecting it promptly when back in the app.

I've never used Discord. Wouldn't that also require using your phone? Might as well use the official thing if you've got to use a phone either way.

It's mostly a question of how good Nintendo's thing is. If it's good, I'll use it. If it's bad, then we can just add a shitload of voice channels to the Nintengoons discord.

I hope that the phone app gently encourages the user to go take a walk after more than an hour of continuous play has passed, so I can read furious, purple-faced tirades about it on twitter from people who really need to take a walk and eat a vegetable.

Discord in mobile drops you from voice if you try to multi-task too. I use the Playstation app for text chat and discord in phones all the time because the audio from the dualshock is terrible. You can plug a headset into your phone on discord or the Playstation app and set voice recieveing volume to half and hear game audio just fine. The only people complaining are the same people who masturbate to Dolby Atmos.

And the dualshock battery is only 2 to 3 hours so good luck talking to your mates if your gaming session is a 5 hour weekend warrior dojo. So I kind of am okay with giving Nintendo's solution a shot cause me on discord on phones all the time anyway. That poo poo is basically the new IRC.

Folks I'm really tempted to throw down the $50 for Splatoon 2. The last testfire was a blast because I decided that motion controls suck dick and the regular dual analog setup made it way more fun.

HDTVs usually have 1-4 frames of input lag between what you do in the controller, and what's shown on screen. This is most noticeable in shooters, fighters, and precision platformers. The screen on the Switch is probably as fast as a monitor (9-17ms, or 0.5-1 frame).
