using one of those as a planter seems like a really bad idea. Those things can be REALLY drat sharp, and prone to rust. And they're bad not just for the safety reasons mentioned, but for the metal taking in heat from the sun and overheating the soil if it gets hot in the summer. Not the best thing for the plants, which are probably used to having a generally-consistent soil temp on account of, y'know, being buried underground. I remember running into this with houseplants when comparing black plastic pots vs. Terracotta. That and plastic retains too much moisture compared to the clay, which is porous. I'm sure metal isn't going to be letting anything through except heat. So not only is it a dumb way to "upcycle" (aren't they all?), but it's not even good for its new intended purpose. Haha.

I can't even believe what I'm reading here. Over here it would be so loving illegal for employers to demand a drug test from their employees/applicants, a company trying it would be sued into the ground, and whoever runs that company get into big trouble themselves. It's one of the largest violations of privacy laws I can think of. Just.... lol america, I suppose.

I think the idea is that in civilized countries you can only drug test for jobs where drug use would impact life safety, like a pilot or a heavy equipment operating. The IT guy or the data entry lady aren't tested and can do whatever drugs they want in their free time.

A huge budget film production in Vancouver tried to force all crew members to take a criminal records check through an American company because there were children in the cast. It was laughed down hard by the unions and the government labour relations board. It wasn't so much the idea of the check itself but more that it was through a U.S. company that could conceivably release the records to the U.S. government and jeopardize the privacy of the Canadian citizens. They settled on only checking crew that were working directly with the kids and only with a wholly Canadian company. The movie tanked anyways. Trucks with monsters in them? DAFUQ?

This means that actually, the employer will have to arrange for paid sick leave for this employee, for a long period of time. And, all kinds of privacy laws come into play when, for a drug test, personal medical data needs to be processed or stored. This is never allowed, except in cases specifically written in the law, such as the drug tests for airliner pilots. So how do you do drug tests without processing personal medical data? I'm guessing it has to be done by a third party, independent medical organisation, who then sends the employer nothing but the conclusion (positive/negative), after having gotten the employee's written permission. So no, it's nothing like the USA where they seem to do blanket drug tests for no reason at all except "we dislike drugs".

My employer (white collar, West Coast US sales/software) says they can drug test, but never does. I did have to go thru a background check to get hired, which turned up a non-violent arrest in my past and caused a hang-up because I didn't disclose it. Sorry, guyz, I got arrested for not paying a traffic fine. Y'all said, "Don't bother with traffic related poo poo," on the form. Be clearer next time.

I have worked 6 different jobs, none of them drug tested, I am in the US, and can confirm the only job I applied for that asked for a drug test was to be a low level employee at Jewel (possibly bagger, I forget, I was 16), I thanked the guy for his time and walked out as soon as he mentioned drug test. I also smoked a lot of weed at 16 and maybe I have done it since then, but would never do so at, or before, work. *edit* Actually, we might do drug tests on NEW employees now because our largest client (a huge retailer) requires it, but they (the client) didn't want to pay to have the 70-100 current employees drug tested. I dodged a drug test today because my manager hosed up and waited a whole day after the incident to queue up the test. The guy from the lab was like "yeah you can't test this guy..." and the only reason it was even brought up is because I balked at the usefulness of a breathalyzer for something that happened a day ago, then the dude looked at the form and realized it had yesterday's date on it. Live to work another day.

My job drug tests for minesite employees, random screen for opiates, weed and amphetamines. A dude driving a 200-ton ore truck with 400-ton of ore on the back of it isn't someone you want tweaking or sedated. Well maybe this thread wants that, but I don't want to be anywhere near it. Unloading a 'dozer at a Western Australia mine in the late 80s. The most important thing to note is that nothing happening here is breaching OH&S laws. The past is a different country.
