After that I take the rest of the starting province from the Dwarfs.

At this point you can do whatever, mostly sacking and razing adjacent enemies. You end up fighting nearly every faction, which keeps things interesting compared to the eastern campaigns with Dwarfs and Gobbos fighting each other forever.

Edit: You also start with a giant spider and Skarsnik has significantly better red skills than Orc leaders. Build lots of goblins (which he makes incredible) plus support like giants, trolls, spiders, catapults, whatever.

gently caress Eight Peaks, Orcs suck. Just conquer the west Dwarfholds and play rear end in a top hat simulator. Nobody can take your poo poo, and your goblins can eventually outcharge Minotaurs.

I'm not joking. Fully upgraded Skarsnik troops charging Minotaurs will beat the Minotaurs.

The thing about the Eight Peaks malus is that it means gently caress all to Skarsnik but is absolutely crippling to Belegar. They really didn't make those campaigns equally fun. It feels like you're actively punished for picking Belegar while Skarsnik can safely ignore his objective the whole game.

Is there a mod that lets units automatically counter charge enemy units that charge them? I've tried searching but I've not had much luck.

Kinda like an anti-skirmish mode, I suppose.

Gobbo infantry also owns, espeically with the buffs from Goblin bosses. Those sneaky skulkers are basically blenders, they get huge melee attack and deal loads of true damage against any target.

I'm excited for all the new races, just as long as the elves aren't too boring. Dark elves espeically should be good fun but the real meat is gonna be aztec dinosaurs and rat assholes.

You can literally beat the eight peaks garrison by having Belegar and Ghost Dads stand in the gate and murder everyone. Underway and sieges make you immune to attrition so even if you lose your western holds just underway your way there with a stack, be bankrupt, and take the place. Sack or occupy some orcs along the way for gold or replenishment. A couple miners to break the gates, 2 grudge throwers to kill towers, and then as many rangers as you can get your hands on to rain death while the dwarf A-team kills everyone.

It's harder to take the eight peaks as Skarsnik but raiding camp stance + underway is a perfect combo for getting there even if you lose your starting land. Raid/sack/teleport to away, as long as you keep your stack healthy you're golden. It's almost like playing a horde.

Do not trust in hope- it will betray you! Only faith and hatred sustain.

Skarsnik can hold off on taking Eight Peaks though since 'can't build orks also slight public order issues' isn't something that needs to go ASAP, but doubled upkeep on all units is. It's a shame, dorfs would be fun if they weren't stuck in the loving badlands fighting nothing but greenskins all day but no the alternate start has to go right to the middle of the badlands ASAP

With Skarsnik, don't forget to abuse the poo poo out of your starting Big Boss. He gets double XP, can punch holes in fortress walls, block armies and assassinate. If you do decide to make the exodus to Eight Peaks, he'll be your best weapon in keeping your little army alive.

I've found it's 50/50 if Karak Norn actually decide to move their stack or leave it put while you casually march past and take Grimhold. If you loiter around long enough to recruit 6 Nasty Skulkers ( 4 turns ) and can tempt their stack to fight you in the open, it's a lot easier than trying to storm Karak Norn directly.

Tried the "two armies two Waaagh's autoresolve siege" method? Always seemed like the most practical way, though not terribly honorable. You're Orks though so gently caress honor.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the normal Skarsnik vs Karak Norn dance, I was mostly commenting because the poster I replied to seemed to be implying that he was able to turn around and sack Reikland before dealing with Karak Norn, which is totally impossible without losing your only town in all of my Skarsnik experiences.

Their reappearance along with the Fimir makes me hopeful CW will delve more into the cool stuff Forge World's been making for Fantasy over the past couple of years. Mournguls for Vamps, Dread Saurians for Lizzies, Gobbas for Greenskins and so on.
Maybe some kind of mechanic where wild stuff like Dreadmaws and Merwyrms can show up at random or be summoned mid battle could be cool.

I'm attacking the town north of the starting point on turn two. The one north of that by four. I get back home by five or six. Immediate aggression, not even waiting to recruit.

Use your hero to halve movement if dwarfs try to attack.

I need to run the Skarsnik campaign again and see how much I can just spam goblin armies with Night Goblin Big bosses.
Just did Grimgor again and it was great fun. Had a night goblin big boss with full buffing skills and where the ROR night goblin units were typically my best performers.
I have played though all factions several times and I just keep returning to Orcs.

They said throgg gets a bonus building if he takes erengrad, in the troll country. So either he starts wit ha little settlement further north or he could start as a horde and transition into a faction like those wandering orc armies.

The "Skaven" was actually a tribe of Beastmen that emperor wiped out. A lot of them looked like rats; clearly not the world-spanning underempire of murderers and slavers that could pour forth from any city drain that the Empire would be overwhelmed by in days that lunatics and heretics keep wailing about!!!

The skaven aren't exactly secret; what is secret is the level of organization, technology, and numbers they have. Most imperials think of them as "beastmen except they look like rats" and stop there; very few know any more about them.

Lassitude
Oct 21, 2003

Yeah. Part of what keeps their true nature unknown is that the truth is too outlandish for most to believe, and hardly anyone ever sees that truth and lives to tell the tale. Another part of it is that the skaven have spies and agents (human ones) who help to keep compelling stories from trusted sources from getting too much traction. So they're known -- Empire soldiers fight them every now and then, and you can't prevent armies of soldiers from talking -- but they're not understood as a separate race than beastmen, let alone one with a sprawling empire which spans the globe.

I start by murdering the poo poo out of the Red Fangs and Bloody Spearz, then when my Waaagh!s appear I turn on the Dwarfs for a while. Overwhelming numbers help a lot, as do well-timed assassinations; Thorgrim and his LLs are much easier to deal with off the field than on. Finally, I avoid Underway battles (they seem to have the advantage there) but a good old-fashioned ambush on the surface will work wonders.

I assume that AI Dwarfs track grudges and so are extra motivated to reclaim lost settlements, making them easier to predict and set ambushes for, but I don't know if that's really true?

Should I be microing my building slots? I used the second slot in Karak-A-Karak to build a second Grudgethrower for Thorgrim, and it hasn't done anything since. I've been thinking about building a Gem Mine there instead, or alternatively move the infantry building to one of the minor settlements.

You definitely shouldn't feel bad about renovating and demolishing/rebuilding building chains. A good rule of thumb is that you should always build the unique upgrades and trade good sources when you can (things like gem/iron mines, lumber mills, and special shrines and stuff). Also, since capitals are the only places you can build t5 buildings, any building chain that ends at t3 is better off in a settlement, unless you're under insane pressure and won't be able to build the new one in time.

Always start with the economy buildings, "The sinews of war are infinite money", as Rome 1 told us; doubly so for Gold and Gem Mines. And yeah, it is a good idea to place the infantry building in a minor settlement, since it only goes up to tier 3.

Make all your recruitment buildings in one or two provinces (Silver Road and Barrak-Var are ideal for the Dwarfs), and for the rest always go for money, garrisons, public order and growth, in that order.

Scrub-Niggurath

I actually hope that the combined campaign map starts with the empire already having confederated most of the elector counts. I think it would be much cooler to start with vast resources and manpower already at your disposal, but you're surrounded by enemies who want to burn it all to the ground.

My dwarf game is going pretty well, it might be going slow but I haven't been completely smashed in my home province and that seems unlikely now. I have a lot of grudges to settle and apparently the longbeards are very angry, is that going to have really bad effects if I let it fester? Right now it's just -2 to public order and like -20 rep I think and the bar is pretty much filled so it looks like it can't get worse.

Thanks for the advice whoever gave it, I just needed a gentler start to learn the economy/pace of the game really and playing as Dwarves definitely eased me in.

Also, for some QoL, install the mod that turns the modifiers from the unique buildings into factionwide benefits, instead of provincial. Personally, I don't feel it messes up the balance too much (since it also applies to the AI) and makes for a more streamlined game.
