I don't think that his mom really said that she was asking dad's mistress not to come, just that she may not come herself. Which is understandable, that would be really hard to deal with. It's an awkward situation, but if she thought there was a real chance she couldn't stand going, warning her son she might not be there is appropriate.

As an aside, if I found out my dad cheated on my mom and was going to stay with his mistress, I probably wouldn't talk to him for a long while. This guy completely ignoring the severity of it is kind of telling.

Horse injured [Virginia]

Hi all,

I board my horse at a commercial riding facility. I never signed a written contract, but every month I paid $500 in board.

2 days ago I went out to the barn, and my horse was caught in loose wire fencing. 6 months ago, another horse was severely injured in the same fencing. Everyone in the equine world knows about the dangers of wire fencing; horses die that way. We boarders were assured that the fencing had been fixed and was no longer a hazard. My horse has lacerations down one leg. The vet will be out tonight, but those lacerations will need suturing and his knee is double the size it should be.

I am beyond furious, but I am trying to stay courteous until I remove the horse from the property Saturday. I do not really want him transported on that leg, but I want him gone from that barn asap.

Do I have reason to ask the barn owner for the cost of the vet visit? This is not a sentimental pet; this is a performance horse that was purchased for $45,000. The vet may want to explore the potential damage to the joint via x-rays, and if the career of the horse is compromised I will seek his value.

Edit: I am documenting everything. I have extensive pictures of the leg, the fencing, and I will ask the vet if I can record the visit.

Do performance horses have racing stripes painted on them to make them faster?

I know I shouldn't be, but I am constantly amazed at people who do something like spend $45,000 on a horse, and then not bother to actually get a contract for its boarding, or pay some sort of horse attorney $500 for a consultation about its damages.

Ole Miss football coach Hugh Freeze resigned effectively immediately on Thursday night, with the Rebels' athletic director telling ESPN that school officials found a pattern of phone calls to a number associated with a female escort service.

...

Freeze had about $2 million left on his contract for this year, $5 million next year and $5.15 million for the 2019 season. Bjork said there had been no buyout or financial negotiations, but it was unclear what or if Freeze would be paid by Ole Miss going forward.

I had a friend a decade ago who had poor impulse control and got into warhammer classic on a whim. He easily dropped a grand or more on a couple box sets, a bunch of special characters (including some zombie dragons that cost a couple hundred bucks), rule books, etc. Dude had a few thousand points worth of minis (which as I understand it is mostly useless, since you can only use 1500 points at a time or something) that ended up in a box and were never used after his wow addiction caused him to drop out of college.

This was all done as a student so it's not like he had much money to spare, warcraft also cost him his job/girlfriend, and he didn't believe in locking up his bicycles so he had more than one stolen.

This is 100% true, but is more due to the fact that expensive horses tend to be larger (more weight = more injuries), bred for looks or speed over soundness, heavily inbred, and are cooped up in a stall or small paddock where they are likely to go stir crazy instead of in a field somewhere where they can run around like a loon to their hearts' content. Million-dollar racehorses and fancy European dancy-horses are lucky to make it through their 20s, but cheap backyard bred ponies basically live forever. There's a Shetland at the barn I grew up riding at who was the riding instructor's first pony, and the instructor was in her 30s. I haven't ridden there in over 10 years but he's apparently still toting little kids around. His little face has gone gray :3:

All equines are BWM though. Ponies living longer just means they can drain money from you for 40+ years instead of 25.

Lots of schools recruit pretty young students to show the players around as part of the recruitment process and undoubtedly some of them also sleep with the players they're showing around. No athletic department would ever explicitly instruct them to do so, if only for fear of liability, but its not unreasonable to assume that's the intent of the whole process.

I'm being lovely but it's absolutely a real thing.

UC-Boulder had the most thoroughly investigated incident in recentish memory (Simpson), featuring the clubhouse leader for scummiest head coach of all time until JoePa took over. My understanding is that most schools implemented a more rigorous "campus ambassadors during official visits are not university-provided fuckbuddies" protocol in the aftermath. Pitino "Assistant Coaches" at Louisville had the decency to hire actual escorts instead of using students, but we're starting to see more stories cropping up again.

There are fascinating and distressing racial and sexual politics interwoven into this whole dynamic, but towards the thread topic:

Hugh Freeze: BWM, lost his job for paying escorts
Bret Bielema: GWM, hooked up with students, costing only his dignity
Bo Ryan: BWM, cost himself his job and nearly his marriage
Rick Pitino: GWM, used university funds and had a fall guy.
