Also, I found a thingie on the woman who was scalped. http://www.ohio.com/news/break-news/norton-woman-s-scalp-torn-from-head-in-accident-at-barberton-parts-maker-1.317964 EDIT: To clarify, I'd mentioned a woman who was scalped at my factory some time ago. Earlier in the thread. "The machine ripped Thayer’s scalp from just above her eyebrows backward toward her neck. Writhing in pain, her mother said, Thayer pleaded for co-workers to cut her loose. It wasn’t until paramedics arrived that she was freed. Thayer was then taken by helicopter to Akron General, which is just a short distance away by ambulance." I had to do one of those, but I was running a tobacco store unsupervised, so I could kind of understand it. Thing is, they didn't tell me about it until I was already on the job for two weeks. I told my district manager straight up that I smoke weed after work and I'm not gonna pass it. He says he'd send back the sample empty to buy me a few weeks of "probation" to decide if he could trust me. A few months later I asked whatever happened with that drug test, and he said he just sent his hair in instead. Best boss ever.

I had an interview here, in secret, because its closer but I dunno. http://www.ohio.com/news/break-news/barberton-woman-dies-from-injuries-suffered-at-ppg-industries-1.413529 This reminds me of the papermachine death someone posted earlier in the thread. That guy went QUICK! "A 51-year-old Barberton woman died of injuries suffered in an industrial accident Monday evening. Wendy Breiding, an employee of PPG Industries in Barberton, died about 8:30 p.m. after becoming entangled in a paper rolling machine, the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office said Tuesday."

Moist von Lipwig posted:Drug testing isn't allowed in Canada though except maybe for heavy equipment operators. Random drug testing isn't typically allowed, but it is in the mines and oil fields. Also you can be drug tested if you gently caress up hard enough around heavy equipment/commercial trucks. And places can require you to take a drug test as a condition of employment. All of this applies to heavy equipment related industries, I have no idea what it's like outside of that, but I've never heard of like a retail or office worker being drug tested for basically any reason.

Yeah, a big part of that is that the Human Rights Council takes it very seriously : quote:If drug and alcohol testing policies and programs discriminate against people based on addictions or perceived addictions, they may be justifiable if an employer can show that testing provisions are bona fide (legitimate) requirements of the job. However, employers should take a proactive approach to workplace drug and alcohol testing. Where these policies are necessary to achieve safety, employers should design them to avoid potential discriminatory impacts. Following the test for bona fide requirements laid out by the Supreme Court of Canada, policies should be: So, yes, you can do it but almost nobody does because even a positive test without suspicion or proof of impairment can land you right in the supreme court which is not somewhere any employer wants to be. Like I said, obviously someone driving a 400t mining truck is gonna be tested but almost anybody else will basically never be subject to it. In fact I don't think I know anyone who's been tested in Canada and that includes some of my family up in Timmins who work in the mines (mostly in a white collar position) and a lot of guys I've worked in warehouses with and stuff. Unless something serious happens and the company wants to pin liability on someone who was inebriated it's quite rare.

You can be subject to employee drug testing in Sweden, but pre-emptive testing is generally only done in certain employments which carries a high risk of third party injury (heavy machinery / power plant operation and the like). Random or post-incident testing has to be approved by employee's union, either on a case by case basis or by blanket approval for said high risk employments.
