Gathering and crafting seems to be 90% of the game.

You can, it just takes a lot longer. The game also forces you to constantly go back to starting zones and grind T2-T3 again if you don't have silver and spare gear sets anymore, unless someone provides you with it. This is why you'll find a lot of people requiring escorts from starting zones to Caerleon, because you can't reliably farm those mats anywhere else or even just flipping between markets is pretty profitable.

It does seem like EVERYONE is doing some sort of crafting or gathering alongside their other stuff. Are they just watering themselves down by spending time on doing that? Kind of a jack of all trades, master of none situation?

From what I can tell if someone just focuses on making swords they will be able to make higher tiers, and eventually get bonuses when crafting swords (higher quality etc). But unless I am missing something the only benefit of focusing on just swords would be crafting those higher tier/better swords sooner than the guy just leveling it on the side. Right?

Yes. Except that "sooner" is really "way way sooner". Tier differences do matter.

That should even out over time, although I'm not sure I want to invest the time to reach that point. Once you can craft T5 gear, you no longer need to go back and get old materials because you can farm T4 materials in Red/Black zones and transmute them to T5 refined materials. But the T5 grind is just nuts without being able to break it up with PvP, but the travel times and risk associated with shifting gears is, I suspect, going to be a killer for most people. If you're the kind of person that wants any sort of log in and chill option, this game is not going to be for you unless you're sticking to blue/yellow zones. Likewise if you want to rush into the black zone to join in the guild fun, you're really dependent on waiting until you can link up with a guild group to do anything for quite some time and you need to be able to harvest T4 materials or you will never have any self-sufficiency in any capacity (you could always get gear crafted by someone else and study it to catch up on crafting, but that doesn't help you for gathering).

Or, you could just say gently caress gathering/ crafting and just buy what you need with silver and just fame farm/ pvp all day.

Ninogan
Apr 2, 2012

I've not gathered or crafted one bit. We have video guides in discord made by forge or blazing i think on how to make silver. You can do a lot of silver farm solo with a bow from t3 already in black zones and make bank. People who says you have to gather or craft are not right. Marketplace can kit you out in a full t4/t5 set of whatever you need and it takes minutes to farm the silver for it. There's usually some groups roaming for pvp try and join up with them by getting a decent ganking T4 weapon (T3 even works tbh) and learn to loot fast when killing pubbies. Killing a gatherer in t5 gatherer gear and selling it on the market is a few tens of thousand silver.

Seems I can't play. Created Shodai after getting home tonight, clicked to enter the game and was immediately presented with a black screen after character creation. I could hear ambient sound effects, but see nothing. Confused, I restarted the client, my character didn't exist...So I created another character, same situation.

Theoretically you never need to go back, but eventually you might lose your last set of tools and if you've got no silver or the time to carry new batches to ie. Goldgrass, then you're kind of doomed. The independency and self-sufficiency really comes from having an abundance of T2-T3 materials stashed everywhere, rather than actually being capable of harvesting T4 mats, because fulfilling the requirements to use things is easier to attain. Although that being said, it's probably unlikely to run into this problem as long as you keep a minimum of t4 tools/mats, but if you ever run out, you're kind of reduced to the status quo.

I haven't crafted anything past the first quest to get the donkey and I haven't gathered anything past the small amount of Tier 1 resources for my farms on my island. You don't have to any of that to participate in PVP and Fame groups.
1. Do dungeons in cities for seed money.
2. Set up a farm on your private island to make some money even when you aren't playing. e:(Do this in Caerleon. You can teleport there from the big cities as long as you don't carry anything.)
3. Don't PVP in expensive gear.

Every day the price of gear and horses is lowering. You can go out on a PVP roam on half of what it would have cost just two days ago. Eventually you'll be able to go out in Tier 4 with a horse for less than 10k, and that's money you only lose when you die. You can even make money if you don't die and loot mans.

You can't transmute the refined materials, only the base. So yes you could take t4 hides to t5, but you'd still need t4 leather to refine.

Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.
If you have the gold or silver to spare and you want to reduce the grind, consider making an alt (or two) and buying a month of premium for them. This allows the alt to begin accumulating learning points (LPs) on the destiny board (200 to start, more build up daily). Then you can keep your main as a gatherer of one resource as well as your main fighter, while your alt(s) can gather your next most needed resource as well as specialize in your crafting/farming skills, etc.

That way you don't have to use only one character's LPs on everything, which effectively handicaps your progression.

More alts means you'll also have more focus points for watering more crops.

This is probably a good idea if you're rolling solo, but in a larger guild crafting/refining alts seem counterproductive. The amount of grind required to hit the higher tiers of crafting and refining seems absolutely nuts, so instead of trying to be self sufficient it's going to be much more efficient just to pool together and feed base materials to dedicated guild crafters and refiners who will be able to reach the higher tiers much, much more quickly that way.

Once we get a large enough group of higher tier crafters and refiners, though, I imagine that working on alts will be really useful.
