can you honestly argue that global poverty is not caused by imperialism? were any of these nations impoverished before they were hit hard by imperialism? i wouldn't say the native americans were

objectively speaking, poverty was the norm everywhere before the industrial revolution, and really even well into the age of electrification. material poverty is maintained by artificially suppressing the ability of third world countries to develop their own productive capacities through predatory lending and unfair trade regimes. it's global capitalism that creates conditions where it's either sweatshops or nothing, by destroying local economies.

No we're not going to blame Columbus for the existence of germs on his continent which he wasn't aware of and didn't intentionally spread. The vast majority of disease death was kicked off accidentally from those very first contacts and preceded ahead of further western colonization from there.

Mexicos population had plummeted from 25 million to 2 million by 1600.

what imperialists did after was totally justified then! when they stole what property the survivors left, killed who they could with intentionally spread disease and of course traditional warfare, and then impoverished them to this very day!

well yeah, the dude literally thought disease was caused by miasmas, which were basically fumes; but the real cause was nevertheless our dirty as gently caress lifestyle. maybe if we had cared enough to even try to make our cities healthy we wouldn't have been walking wmds

he actually managed to depopulate the areas he ruled with no help from disease using brutal slavery that actually caused the queen of spain to be like "what the gently caress we're supposed to be christians here, stop this poo poo." he worked whole islands to death

so columbus doesn't get a break sorry

which is beside the point, you're supposed to use centrist trolling in this thread and these are distinctly right-wing lovely opinions and not even dressed up enough to pass as center right

To be fair back then you were told you were born of sin and needed to spend your whole life atoning. It's really not a huge jump to go from that to you were born uneducated and if you aren't succeeding its because you didn't try hard enough.

That would be relevant if his argument was "it's the best we can do" and not "it's better than nothing".

You have to ask what the motivation is for making this argument, though. He'd have a point if there was some major political momentum towards just eliminating all sweatshop (or similar) labor, but there isn't. It comes off as a bizarre argument, because it's pushing back against a movement that doesn't really exist in any capacity in the context of a situation that is obviously still unacceptably bad. A reasonable person in this situation would think "it is bad that these people are being exploited, perhaps we should do something about this" instead of defending against a misrepresentation of the anti-sweatshop argument.
