Well, that aligns with the vibes I was getting. Which was, like, "normal" kinda vibes.
There's a lot I liked about this episode, starting with Carl's ability to summon a mobile command station at a toot of a whistle. I liked Hawk talking about how the symbol for fire could mean many things, and how it was like electricity. It makes me think that there's going to be some connection like Fire : Wood :: Electricity : ??? that ties the Lodges to the real world. Speak of, there's a few instances of people who obviously need to go to the hospital and I suspect that next episode will bring in that as a location, maybe showing off the two incidents we saw today (Richard's target from last week and the vomiting girl) along with perhaps other people who have begun being affected by the "black flame" of influence. With the vomiting girl, the drug wizard, Briggs' prophecy, and the wormhole and soot hobos taking up more and more screen time I think that the end of this season is going to be cataclysmic. Like, sky tearing open, people running in terror, with a super group of Bobby, Truman, Hawk, Cole, Albert and Cooper facing off against malice personified. This is obviously much bigger than Twin Peaks, but I hope that it doesn't poo poo the bed in the final hours because an arc that goes from small town murder to a battle between the dueling natures of humanity would be pretty exciting.

In a more grounded note, Cooper keeps exhibiting colossal good fortune in Vegas, falling rear end over backwards into thwarting his third assassination attempt. Now there's Anthony who's going to be coming for him, but the Mitchum brothers being in Cooper's corner means that they know Tony's a lying piece of poo poo who wanted them to kill their good buddy Dougie and have access to their own network of hitmen. I think Anthony's going to see Cooper come into work just before suffering from a fatal case of car bomb. That leave Tim Roth's character, who seems more frightening if only because he has less to lose than Anthony. Just like Ike, the most terrifying killers are the ones who make a beeline for the target, not the ones who hem and haw and worry about the aftermath. I don't think we'll get old Cooper back until both of those threats are dealt with; Mike advised/commanded Cooper not to die and so far, so good. That other casino owner is dead meat though.

I think Lynch genuinely believes TM is helping people. But it does shoehorn in a weird metaphysical reality belief that is somewhat problematic in a therepeutic setting. They do request money but will give grants to people for free lessons if they can't afford it. I think a lot of the money goes towards teaching prisoners, veterans, juveniles and funding individual grants.

It's not a bad thing, but I think it promises more than it should.

His last "I know, 'gently caress you, Albert'" felt really loaded, as it came directly after seeing Diane mouthing the coordinates from Ruth's arm.

I still have no loving idea what is up with Diane, but I have basically two predictions. One is that she is Phillip Jeffries - not literally (well maybe), but she's the one Bad Cooper and Ray were communicating with, and while she's not working with the FBI, she's not working against them either.

My other prediction is that she's straight up evil and working with Bad Coop (whether she's a doppelganger or not, I have no idea), and I think if that's the case, she's gonna kill Albert.

There is a video of David Lynch and a German dude digging a hole in the middle of the night chanting "Invincible Germany". David Lynch is a weird cultist, and possibly funding closet nazis. That doesn't mean I dislike his work. It's just something to be aware of.

Cults usually break you down to nothing before building you up in their "image", take your money, isolate you from family and friends (non believers) and typically frown upon you leaving to downright preventing you from leaving. Is there any proof of any of this or is any organization that asks for donations a cult to you?

Any form of meditation, despite how metaphysical it gets, along working with a genuine and caring teacher, and learning skills to prevent one from acting in reactive ways that are harmful is a therapeutic experience than most of these impoverished people will ever get. Research shows a good therapeutic relationship and experience has more influence on good outcomes than the type of therapy. As much as my misgivings with TM, it's very likely doing more good than harm. I think when Lynch advertises it has some panacea for troubled people, that's when my red flags go up some more due to the lofty promise and narrowing therapeutic choices.

Der Spiegel posted:

"Invincible Germany! Invincible Germany! I want to hear you all say, invincible Germany!" said Schiffgens to the audience in Berlin's Urania theater.

Reaction from the audience was immediate -- and overwhelmingly negative. "That's what Hitler wanted!" shouted one man.

Schiffgens' response only made matters worse: "Yes, but unfortunately he didn't succeed."

Schiffgens might have been forgiven for his eccentricity -- he was wearing a flowing white robe and a gold crown, and described himself as the "raja" (king or prince) of Germany. But even in the peaceful context of Transcendental Meditation, an institution that promotes German "invincibility" is not likely to be welcomed in a nation where the horrors of Nazi rule are deeply ingrained in the collective consciousness.

Protests from the audience became loud enough that Lynch eventually approached the microphone himself. "I don't know what he (Schiffgens) said, but I think I understand that he used a word from the Third Reich, and let's just look at it this way, it's a new world now," said Lynch.

TM as a practice is hard to complain about, but the actual organization is definitely culty. My aunt was sucked into it for a while and spent way too much money on Maharishi-branded ayurvedic stuff. I mean, I'm glad it was that and not Scientology or something, and to be fair that rose petal jam is delicious, but it's not fun to feel like you're losing a family member to an obvious huckster like Mahesh. Moreover, you definitely do not need to spend a thousand dollars at a TM center to learn how to meditate. I mean, if you do it and that works for you then great, but it seems pretty transparently meant to suck you into the Maharishi worship thing.

I don't really think any of this is an indictment of Lynch though. Yeah, maybe he believes in yogic flying and other nonsense, but even if that's true it's still and by far the least weird thing about him.

It's kind of crucial that he happened to do it in Germany because (believe it or not) there are still a lot of Nazis in Germany, and this is definitely catering to them. Emanuel Schiffgens should know. He's German as well. If you give money to people like that, chances are they might give some of it to their Nazi friends or help recruit impressionable people.
