There's tons of horrible poo poo you could use, but the dems are too terrified of doing that because it'll piss off their donors.

You don't need full socialism, just some actual loving popular policies for once rather than just carrying water for the donor class. I would like the parties to move left too but first and foremost they need to stop being glorified pass-throughs for rich assholes.

There is a large set of policies that have bipartisan appeal but they're never put on the table by either party because the donors and rich multinationals say no.

The point of the post was not arguing against socialism . I'm just saying that if the Dems just stopped the shameless shilling for corporate interests they might win more elections.

I don't think a lot of people would be rallying around the causes of socialism if the democrats had not been spending every chance they've had since 1992 or so pretending to be moderate republicans.

We're not having this conversation had the Clinton's not bungled single payer in 1992. We're not having having this conversation had they not deregulated a good chunk of wall street. We're also not having this conversation if Obama had bailed out main street, not wall street.

They had their chances time and time again, when the time was there? they hosed up.

Yep. There's some policies where the difference in public support vs. congressional support is staggering. Universal healthcare, net neutrality, importing prescriptions, indiscriminate surveillance, weed legality, fixing the deficit with higher taxes on the 1%, and of course, the All-Father, campaign finance reform.

http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-echochambers-27074746

quote:

Multivariate analysis indicates that economic elites and organised groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on US government policy, while average citizens and mass-based interest groups have little or no independent influence.

In English: the wealthy few move policy, while the average American has little power.

The two professors came to this conclusion after reviewing answers to 1,779 survey questions asked between 1981 and 2002 on public policy issues. They broke the responses down by income level, and then determined how often certain income levels and organised interest groups saw their policy preferences enacted.

"A proposed policy change with low support among economically elite Americans (one-out-of-five in favour) is adopted only about 18% of the time," they write, "while a proposed change with high support (four-out-of-five in favour) is adopted about 45% of the time."
On the other hand:

When a majority of citizens disagrees with economic elites and/or with organised interests, they generally lose. Moreover, because of the strong status quo bias built into the US political system, even when fairly large majorities of Americans favour policy change, they generally do not get it.

Absolutely.

I think there are absolutely are things to attack Trump over, but a good portion of the stuff he's done "wrong" have been things that mainstream democrats and republicans as a whole have already ventured into.

I think what frustrates about me the immigration issue is two fold. The GOP just wanting to throw everyone out, and the Dems wanting to keep the status quo for the most part. It shouldn't be that hard to say "Allow people in/keep people in. Punish companies/people that pay below minimum wage. Deport legit criminals. Tell Mexico to fix it's poo poo". I don't think that's entirely unfair to say.

The guy running the Mexican restaurant down the street or the dude's working the field should stay. But the latter shouldn't be hosed out of a paycheck.

It's a group of bourgeois democrats and republicans going against Trump not based on policy, but rather based on his decorum. They'll let people like Evan McMullin, Glenn Beck, The Bush Family's and others into their ranks because "They're GOOD Republicans" or whatever the gently caress.

Chu is the greatest example.

A man that constantly bitches about how horrible white people are, yet lives in the whitest, richest suburb of cleveland. If he actually hated white people? He'd live in East Cleveland or at the very least? Lakewood.

He also routinely treated his wife like trash, made her run errands and treated her the very definition of how one would think a sexist would treat his wife. I really wish people in his community would exile him.

I'd rather not join "The Resistance".

It feels like their goals are not in "alliance" with my own. They seem more so interested in bringing back the West Wing fantasy than advocating for left wing reforms of the government.

On the flip side? I don't exactly agree with everything that the DSA is for but I feel like I'm much more likely to be in their camp.
