That said, this is a lovely way for it to happen and it puts us on a course to test the strength of our democratic institutions in a way that should scare you at least a little bit. Trump ditching Sessions specifically to get at Mueller would put Republicans in a position where they absolutely have to either act or admit that they have no interest at all in checking the power of the executive.

Sessions is an unbelievably, unfathomably lovely human being, but he's also at least moderately intelligent, smart enough to know how to get done what he wants done. There are people Trump could find who are even worse in their objectives, but there aren't many there who have the combination of malice, knowledge/experience, and ability. Plus the fallout would be truly spectacular and preclude the replacement from doing almost anything other than attending Senate hearings or getting raked over the coals.
