He's a huge Mega Man X fan so I showed him the Mega Man X ios remake in comparison, so he'd understand, but then he said that looked alright too. What the fuuuuck.

Sonic 4 looks totally fine if you're just looking at a youtube video. Youtube has been compressed and lovely for so long your brain just kinda turns off on evaluating things. You can't notice the physics either, not if you don't know to look for them. He rolls into a ball and goes zoom! Look fine, what are you complaining about? It's when you sit down and the poo poo rolls down and around you, thundering into your ears and going into every orifice you begin to understand Sonic 4. Even though it shouldn't, it has a taste and smell, old unwashed socks and burnt plastic.

I own the Studiopolis shirt for being a stealthy sonic fan, and then a red version of the artistic master system / sega sonic t-shirt I legitimately can't find a picture of and it's kinda weird...

Every Sonic fan should own the Studiopolis shirt though.

Also I want the Sonic track team shirt I saw a buddy wearing last week, but I forgot to ask where he got it.

I dunno man, I don't find it to look fine at all. When S4 was announced I looked at the jumps and thought the physics didn't look right and I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one but for every person who complained about it a different reviewer dismissed it as "just not being the same as the old games". It's like there's no gravity and every curve the character makes is a pre-defined parabola. Just watching the first 30 seconds of Cybershell's videos and you have the weird weightless jump, the walking animation that looks like he's skating and a bunch of oddities. You know, things that look wrong in comparison to any platform game.

Sure I know how to look for them but good lord are they jarring.

It was a limited collection from last year I'm afraid, not sure if they'll do a second lot.

There was a black bomber jacket with sonic on the back in white outline and the inside was green hills checkers that I should have got too.

It all came packaged with a 90s AF poster, some stickers with their brand logo in a robotnik TV, and each one also had a randomly coloured mini- chaos emerald. I got blue which is the best one

I feel the same way, unless they felt they couldn't yet do Sonic 3's masterpiece level justice and wanted to fix one of the worse levels first.

I wrote a blog post on it if you wanna read, but mine were Marble Zone, Flying Battery, Tidal Tempest, Hill Top, Quartz Quadrant, Oil Ocean and Hydrocity.

I find with the latest reveal, though, I honestly don't care all that much anymore. Everything looks good. Green Hill, which I am sick of, just looks so good. Like people complain about zones in the classic games, but after 2-3 recent playthroughs I don't find any of them actually bad or even less than good.

And here I thought I was the only person who liked Oil Ocean. Interesting list, though I'm not really a fan of Marble or Hill Top.

I'll see if I can draft my own but I'll probably have to self-police myself not to stuff it full of Sonic & Knuckles, which is far and away my favorite in the series (even moreso than Sonic 3 & Knuckles combined, weirdly enough).

That's absolutely not my top 7 zones, it's more stuff for a variety of reasons I thought would flesh out and be interesting in mania. Though I do like Oil Ocean, it's such a weird and janky level.

Oil Ocean is probably my favorite Sonic 2 level, though it's not perfect - the boss is pretty lackluster - but I'll freely admit Chemical Plant is far more iconic so I've no complaints with its inclusion.

The first game's actually the hardest one for me to sift through for zones I like. I got my start with these games playing Sonic 2, then 3, then Knuckles, before finally coming back around to good ol' Sonic 1 which, after playing the sequels, showed its age a bit. Green Hill's a big deal, of course, but other than that I'm struggling to think of zones I'd really like to see remixed.

My list for top zones I'd like to see remixed. They're not necessarily my favorite for each game, but I think they have good remix potential:

Sonic 1 - The biggest problem off the bat with Sonic 1 is that most of the zones have been done better in later games (at least in terms of aesthetics). Like, I wouldn't choose Scrap Brain Zone over, say, Metropolis Zone. Other than the music, why do Star Light instead of Stardust Speedway? Collision Chaos (esp its past version) is better than Spring Yard, albeit I'd consider Casino/Carnival in the same category of "bouncy zones" and pick one of those instead. To be honest, after looking through the list of zones, the best is honestly probably Green Hill, as much as I hate to admit it. Marble Zone would be my next choice, even if it's surpassed by Hill Top for a similar aesthetic.

Sonic 2 - I'd be happy with any of Mystic Cave, Metropolis, or Wing Fortress (which I've always preferred to Flying Battery). Oil Ocean could be cool, but I think a better execution of Metropolis than what we got would be really nice. It's probably my favorite factory zone aesthetically.

Sonic CD - Quartz Quadrant or Stardust Speedway. Never Wacky Workbench, the gimmick is unsalvageable.

Sonic 3 - Hoooo boy. To be honest, Angel Island zone is really cool, but given that we're always getting Green Hill I never see it happening. I'd say IceCap, but I think the only reason I even like that zone is the snowboarding at the beginning. Overall, the one my heart is telling me to pick is Launch Base, which is sort of a "factory zone" like Metropolis, I guess, but I really like how dynamic the level is with the collapsing buildings and switches you have to break. It has a little bit of a water level, a little bit of a factory level, and a smattering of other concepts.

S&K - Honestly, I'd pick every zone other than Flying Battery or Sandopolis if given the chance. I really like S&K's Death Egg with the gravity nonsense, and am tempted to pick that. I'm also tempted to say "make a full level out of Hidden Palace zone", but I think overall I'd pick Lava Reef which is probably my favorite classic Sonic level in both gameplay and aesthetics.

I'll riff off yours:

S1 - Green Hill is a good pick. Or Starlight.

S2 - Chemical Plant and Hilltop, without a doubt.

S3 - Angel Island and Hydrocity, also no doubt.

S&K - Flying Battery, foremost, then Lava Reef. Sky Sanctuary, and Death Egg are also great. Goddamn what a good game.

Can't say I expected Hill Top to resonate with so many people. It's got jammin' tunes, sure, but otherwise I've always felt like it was Sonic 2's most forgettable level - which isn't to say it's a bad level, just if I had to rank them that's where I'd put it relative to its peers.

Sonic 1 has held up the best for me, the levels are my fav. Sonic 2 is also up there for me, with Sonic 3 having some levels that just didn't appeal to me with various annoyances. I don't see what would make Sonic 1 age in particular, just a personal taste thing I think, some like 3, some like 1, etc.

IIRC the spindash required a fair bit of momentum in the first game to get going, which is a bit annoying after the sequels let you charge up on the spot. It's a minor thing, yeah, but it's a thing.

Otherwise you're probably right, I just prefer the way later games did things. I like pretty much every level in Sonic 3 & Knuckles except perhaps for Carnival Night, and even then I like certain things about that level even if I'm not a huge fan of the level itself.
