The NYC subway has excellent station density and runs 24/7. Meanwhile the Chengdu public transit network starts closing down at 8 PM in some areas and by 10 PM it's closing city-wide. The subway coverage isn't great but it's still under construction so it has an excuse.

In Seoul, Taipei and Bangkok you can find a bar open all night but those trains stop running around midnight, maybe a bit later depending on which stations you're going between. Taipei and Seoul at least have great networks and the Bangkok one is about as good as you can expect but man it kills me that they close so early.

I've noticed that in SZ at least, none of the train operators are over the age of like 23. I wonder if they close them so early because they can't find anyone stay awake past their bedtime. Because it's not public transportation, it's get the cogs to their factories for industrial output transportation. They don't give a gently caress about providing services to improve the lives of citizens. Everything in Chengdu is closed by like 8/9 PM so other than expat bars and KTVs there's no reason to be out anyway.

I still don't understand why Seoul shuts down their subways around midnight. It becomes an awkward timing dance when you're out late. You either: (a) Plan to start and finish early, and somehow get to the subway before 23:30. (b) Try to find a taxi driver that's willing to drive you (i.e. they are looking for fares that lead them close to home) between 1 ~ 3 AM. (c) Drink until you run out of cash, then hang out in front of a GS25 eating instant noodles and drinking soju out of paper cups until the subway starts running again. Everyone eats around the same time, wheres their coats till its officially spring etc. makers perfect sense that after dinner its time to close.
