It's so odd, he couldn't get 50 votes for his biggest thing, so he wants to change the requirement to 50 votes so he can pass his biggest thing.

Half the reason the bill didn't pass was because he's stupid and his solution to the problem is to be more stupid.

I think Trump for once is not quite wrong (broken clock etc.). The Senate only tried to pass skinny repeal because they couldn't rip out important (and expensive) parts of Obamacare through reconciliation. Mitch could likely have crafted a bill that stood a higher chance of getting to 50 votes if he didn't need to follow reconciliation rules.

On the other hand, pre-existing conditions, medicare expansion and letting kids stay on their parents plan are very popular, and the GOP has largely abandoned the effort to undo these parts of the ACA. I'm not sure if there are 50 votes to get rid of them, at least Murkoswki and Collins seem sure to vote against any such measures. So maybe Mitch would not be able to pass Obamacare repeal if the filibuster were abolished. But I think the chances of the Better Health Care Act (or whatever it's called) passing would have been quite a bit higher.

Medicaid expansion, and they have absolutely not given up their crusade against the ban on pre-existing conditions. They really want to jack up the insurance rates of CF patients.

Remember about a month or two ago, when South Korea was upset about finding out the US was supposedly deploying more THAAD systems than allowed, and threatened to end cooperation involving THAAD deployment altogether as a political move?

I believe they still don't have a nuclear device small enough to fit on this missile, also they'd be wiped out if they try anything. The range issue is troubling though.

North Korea has been treated like a joke for like 20 years.

The problem when you're trivializing an entire regime outright on the basis of its lovely infrastructure, ludicrous leadership, and desolate state of its military for decades, is that it's hard to go back to reasonable, sound threat assessment in the eyes of your own political leadership. Now imagine your leadership being the well-oiled machine of reason that is the Trump administration.

I sifted through the TFR thread, and there are some folks arguing that this missile isn't exactly an indication that they can deliver a nuclear weapon NOW as much as it shows the platform for the delivery is apparently ahead of schedule. Actually sizing down a warhead for the reentry vehicle, and testing "throw weight" (a term I've now learned) seems to be a different discussion, and there are still a bunch of question marks.

The problem is that this trivialization still isn't going away.

NK is so hosed up that you'd have to maintain hard rule over them for at least a generation to start getting them re-educated, and the West doesn't have the stomach for that.

Maybe make it a new rule that failed states become UN territory. Encourage regimes to actually come up with something workable.

Facebook kills AI that invented its own language because English was slow

Some wonderful things are in development because of advances made in artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies. At the same time, there is perhaps an uncomfortable fear that machines may rise up and turn against humans. Usually the scenario is brought up in a joking matter, but it was no laughing manner to researchers at Facebook who shut down an AI they invented after it taught itself a new language, Digital Journal reports.

The AI was trained in English but apparently had grown fed up with the various nuances and inconsistencies. Rather than continue down that path, it developed a system of code words to make communication more efficient.

What spooked the researchers is that the phrases used by the AI seemed like gibberish and were unintelligible to them, but made perfect sense to AI agents. This allowed the AI agents to communicate with one another without the researchers knowing what information was being shared.

During one exchange, two bots named Bob and Alice abandoned English grammar rules and started communicating using the made up language. Bob kicked things off by saying, "I can i i everything else," which prompted Alice to respond, "balls have zero to me to me to me..." The conversation went on in that manner.

The researchers believe the exchange represents more than just a bunch of nonsense, which is what it appears to be on the surface. They note that repeating words and phrases such as "i" and "to me" are indicative of how AI works. In this particular conversation, they believe the bots were discussing how many of each item they should take.

AI technologies use a "reward" system in which they expect of a course of action to have a "benefit."

"There was no reward to sticking to English language," Dhruv Batra, a research scientists from Georgia Tech who was at Facebook AI Research (FAIR), told Fast Co. Design. "Agents will drift off understandable language and invent codewords for themselves. Like if I say 'the' five times, you interpret that to mean I want five copies of this item. This isn't so different from the way communities of humans create shorthands."

Facebook ultimately determined that it wanted its bots to speak in plain English, in part because the interest was in making bots that can talk with people. However, researchers at Facebook also admitted that they can't truly understand languages invented by AI.

A lot of this stuff makes more sense when you picture Trump as Generic Fox News Viewer. He's old as gently caress, shouts out opinions at random times, and actually has no idea what he's talking about. The producers just pick what random thing to get angry about on that given day.

Most days, he has about as much power as a Generic Fox News Viewer too. Senators have essentially figured out that all of his lashing out is just a brain-broke old gently caress trying to push off blame on to anyone like a Reverse Truman, so they've tuned it out.

I'm more concerned (I can't use that word the same way now) about how China, or anybody else on the opposite end of these rants that aren't involved in the day-to-day of Washington might handle these tweets. Like is China doing the same thing, thinking Trump is just larding off and it'll amount to nothing?
