I honestly don't fault him.

MoMA might be in the camp of 'true believer' for Star Citizen, but he isn't an rear end in a top hat, and he's been pretty fair and frank with the forum. Lethality is a dumb rear end in a top hat. Crymelion is a dumbasshole. MoMA is just a dude - A seemingly pretty nice dude! In return, SA hasn't really treated him with the same level of respect that he's given SA. Sure, MoMA's not a perfect dude, but as I said, he's been a decent poster on the other side of the fence. SA gets a hard-on every time something he says is even slightly wrong or untrue and instead of attempting to have a conversation about it - something MoMA seems at least somewhat willing to engage in - the forum just piles on him. I would stick to white noise as well under those circumstances.

So I have a request for the Thread: Be nicer to MoMA. Give him the benefit of the doubt by default. I'd argue MoMA seems reasonable, and as such, it's a matter of time before he's Beer 2.0.

To that end, I have a question for MoMA: CIG has delivered pretty much nothing that you'd hope they'd deliver by this time. This game isn't going anywhere and I really want to see you get a refund before it's too late. When are you going to get that refund? What's the trigger going to be?

It's mind-blowing, I know, but many years ago Blizzard hit upon a secret formula: Archer some basic concepts, really really focus on gameplay, and don't crobble things up.

Taken individually, none of those steps seem important or good, but weirdly when you mix them together they turn into a giant never-ending money fountain.

SC2 made money, sure. But lots of bad things make heaps of money. I'd be curious to see the sales numbers for Wings of Liberty VS Heart of the Swarm VS Legacy of the Void.

SC2, by just about every other metric, fell short of what Blizzard wanted. The fact that SC1 is still better regarded and was still selling copies is more than enough proof that they got something wrong. I'll just copy/paste what I said from the Starcraft HD thread.

Milky Moor posted:

I can only offer some vague ideas.
  • SC2's art style didn't feel as 'dark' or 'grim' as SC1 to some. Some, like the Protoss, have a very different feel.
  • The balance was never as good and many iconic units, like Lurkers, weren't present. Many of the new units felt boring, bland or uninteresting compared to what they replaced.
  • Someone who knows more about the actual MP gameplay than me could probably describe it better but I think in SC2 you needed to be much better at micro with things like HQ abilities and new additions. I also think there were major issues with patching and balance and the 'metagame'.
  • The SC2 Arcade system basically killed the UMS scene before it ever could get off the ground. Custom campaigns, too.
  • The single player story began at 'somewhat poor to mediocre' and rapidly went downhill to 'terrible WoWesque idiocy'. Additionally, SC2 seemed to just ignore the events of Brood War. There are many times where the campaign can't even maintain consistency with itself.
  • What, three years between each release? Let's be honest, neither HotS or LotV felt like they were worth three years of development. For reference, SC was released in March 1998 and BW came out in November of that same year.
  • The new Battle.Net was really bad.

SC2 sold a poo poo load, still in top 20 best selling PC games.
SC Remastered is for Korea mainly, as they still play it a lot.
Updating the game for their PC Bang game stores is a loving genius idea to sell more of it. Making it 4k is just a side part of it.

SC's market is not here in the EU or US basically.

The very first excuse is absolutely bullshit. There is no way an interdependent milestone gets delayed without pushing the actual release dates further on EVERYTHING that depends on these milestones. You give yourself a window in case something unexpected happens and then you shift things to the right, but once the unexpected thing happens its now a known value and it pushes everything further because you dont know if something else will pop up, you still give yourself that window.

The rest of the excuses are "Making games is hard! You are getting more even if its actually less! FIDELITY FIDELITY!"

quote:

Today, 3.0 is about delivering an entirely explorable solar system with the backend services to make it dynamic. It’s about giving us the city and planet building tools to create for you the rest of the universe in an intelligent, scalable, efficient, and compelling manner. It’s about the first step in giving you the tools to create player outposts and communities. It’s about the streaming tech to allow you to take off from one moon, fly across the system, and land on an entirely different moon, thee driving a freaking sweet buggy out of the back of your ship to race around the entire planet... all without a loading screen. It’s about you the ability to buy what’s on the web inside kiosks. It’s about usable turret gameplay, and Items 2.0 so you can customize your own ship with new components. It’s about picking objects and cargo so you can haul commodities across space as a trader and merchant. It’s about gutting a singleplayer engine to support thousands of players. It’s about infrastructure that we needed to develop because there are no off-the-shelf solutions for building an immersive experience like no other.

So 3.0 in 2019? Buckle in commandos.

Q: "where do you see it going in the next year, year after that?"
Crobberts: "going down to a planet, landing in an area... and so we'll flesh out a star system... and at the end of the year [2016] we're gonna open it up so you can visit other some other star systems"

Gamestar article from Gamescom 2016

(German) "Er sei zwar zuversichtlich, dass das erste Kapitel der Solokampagne noch dieses Jahr fertig werde, garantieren wolle er's aber nicht."

(Google translate) "He is confident that the first chapter of the Solo Campaign [Sq42] will be finished this year [2016], but he does not want to guarantee it"

Gamestar video from August 2016

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2nQKp03DXA&t=365s

Summary: CIG hope that Sq42 will be out by the end of 2016.

Gamestar article from September 2016

"Squadron 42 might be delayed"

PC Gamer article from September 2016

“Chris stated in an interview that all content for Squadron 42 (graphics, missions) will be complete by the end of the year. There is still more work to do concerning some basic systems like the AI or the cover system for infiltration missions. Those will take more time.” But he added separately, “You are right, that was a mistake. I have watched the recording of the interview again (his conversation with Chris Roberts during Gamescom), and Chris talked about 2017. You hear that much during Gamescom, I've just mixed things up.”

Gamestar interview with Crobberts from September 2016

"Basically, SQ42 should be finished at the end of the year and then will undergo a polishing time, how long this will be, is unclear at the moment. Hope I helped some of you and didn't confuse you even more haha"

Gamestar interview with Crobberts from January 2017 (part 1)

"the complete Stanton-star systems in the Alpha 3.0"

"We've looked at 3.0 and said. We need that and that and that and then we found: drat, that's more than has so many complete game. Therefore, we develop a detailed plan for all tasks and subtasks. If that is done, we will share this plan with the community. This is expected to be the case at some point in January, depending on when the production team the information gets from the project managers. "

Gamestar interview with Crobberts from January 2017 (part 2)

"Gamestar asks when does C.R. personally want S42 to release. C.R.: "2017, but not early this year". Gamestar asks what C.R. is looking forward to in 2017. Answer: S42 and 3.0. They both are huge milestones. And especially S42 will leave a deep impression. With this he means especially the characters wich you will meet. Players are allowed to spend time with characters and when the story is accelerating to the end, you should know who you like and who not. And if something sad happens with characters it has an emotional impact on you."

Gamestar article from January 2017 (screenshots post)

"What comes with 3.0? Whole system. Explorable planets (Hurston, MicroTech, ArcCorp, Delamar and others) new stations."

"3.0 schedule plan is announced for January."

He was like this in the old days too: Far too loving arrogant and up his own backside to ever read how anyone feels about his games. He simply felt they were masterpieces and acted as such, even though he had almost nothing to do do with a number of his games other then have his name on the box.
