Turtlicious posted:I don't get the infinite .9's one? How is .99999999... = 1? It's a different number. Let me settle this right now. If a helicopter rotates its blades at a rate of .9999999... revolutions per second and is sitting on a turntable that is rotating at 1 revolution per second in the opposite direction it will never take off. Hence they're equal. It's really simple if you think about it.

Also if you spun a helicopter on a turn table that fast, it would fly off of it and kill someone. e:wait the turn table wouldn't stop the helicopter taking off at all.

Calling it pedaling is definitely a real thing because without that we wouldn't have the hilarious term "piss-pedaling".

Okay, if you're serious... 0.99...=1 is a longstanding internet arguement. It does equal one, but the reason why gets into mathematical concepts that aren't normally taught in basic algebra. Things like the different kinds of infinity. The most basic argument that seems obviously convincing to me is, what is 1-0.999...? Well, it's an infinity of zeros, right? The 0.999... doesn't stop, so it's zeroes forever, so they're the same. There's lots of videos and websites that get into more detail if you're interested. Google search Meh, I'm sure there are non-posters watching this. They can follow the ample search links and not clutter up this thread. A funny observation: most of the thread-derailing discussion points basically provoke massive discussions through a deliberate ambiguity in the initial statement, which leads to people mostly arguing past each other. But the 0.999... = 1 debate literally involves one side being totally and unambiguously wrong, yet still provokes similarly intense arguments.

From what I've been told (I am not an expert in ANY sense,) calling someone a trap is super bad because of the implication that they're trying to trick / deceive you in some way. Plus like most things, 4chan ruined it.

Turtlicious posted:I don't get the infinite .9's one? How is .99999999... = 1? It's a different number. TLDR: "infinite .9s repeating" isn't a number, its more like a formula which if you really solve it equals 1. You can never actually represent "infinite .9s" at one time on paper, its not a number, its an idea of a number. Get it? The solution involves limits and cardinality of sets, if you don't know calculus its not really gonna grok easily. The confusion comes from thinking you can't have two different numbers that are equal (true) but the thing is .9999 isn't 1, its only infinite .999999s which isn't really a number. So there's no problem. Zaphod42 has a new favorite as of 11:11 on Jul 31, 2017 |
