Does the Pixel actually do more spying on you than an average Android? I got an iPhone, and while I'm going to try to finish setting everything up and then give it a week or so, I'm not liking it so far. I might just sell it and buy a used Pixel. Any news on when to expect an announcement on the new Moto G?

All android phones are pretty much purpose built to spy on you. The only difference in how much is gonna be which apps you have installed.

This. I go to work. I go out once in a while to my friend's bar. I take my kids to kid events. Just because Russian spies happen to be there already isn't my fault or concern.

I exclusively use my phone for looking at German fetish porn so if anyone spies on me they're probably going to have either a really good or really, really bad day.

I have a couple broken phones that I want to get rid of, but can't figure out how to wipe first. One is a first gen Moto X with a broken screen (phone vibrates, so apparently turns on, but screen is dead), and other is a LG G5 that bootlooped and won't turn on now. I'd like to drop them at the local electronics recycling place, but both phones had access to Gmail, bank accounts, etc. Even though they're apparently unusable, it makes a little paranoid to just leave them somewhere. Neither seem to be tied into the Google Find My Device thing that would allow remote wiping (it only seems to reference the current phone?). Any suggestions, simpler the better? I don't really want to spend a ton of time mucking about with dead phones I'm tossing out anyway. Or am I being worried over nothing?

For the LG you don't really have to worry since the only way to bypass bootlooping is with a manufacturer-only diagnostic tool. However if you're super paranoid and it will still work you can try booting into Recovery and running a Factory Reset form there; after powering off the device hold the power button and volume down until the menu appears. For the Moto X you can look up instructions on how to do this for the version it was last updated to; I'd recommend finding a Youtube video showcasing the steps so you can navigate blindly by the number of required button presses to get to the Factory Reset option.

Anyone using low energy Bluetooth devices with a G5 Plus? I have a BLE heart rate strap, it works fine with the old Z3 Compact but not with the G5+. It can see it, but it gets no data. Ideas? Of course, since they made the assistant useless without enabling voice unlock I don't really use the hotword with my phone anyway these days. It'll wake both, but the Home will take precedence and the phone'll pop up and say "answering on another device." Or at least it used to, on a Pixel.

It did a couple weeks ago when I was visiting my mother, who got one with her Pixel. I bought her an Echo a couple mother's days ago but after a while she took to calling it a "dumb ho" because it wasn't listening, and has so far been happy with her Google Home.

Are there any recommendations on adapters that allow charging and 3.5mm audio out from USB-C port on a Pixel XL? Trying to cut down on cord clutter.

I would say don't throw money at this since your Pixel actually has a headphone jack. But I wonder - does the USB-C standard support this? I've found a few on Amazon but the reviews all say that it either won't charge or it charges very slowly.

I dunno if anybody else jumped on it, but the refurb Woot Pixel came with an Alcatel One Touch usb-a wall wart (5v/2A) and an A-C cable, and nothing else. Seems to be slowly losing charge when powered on, too. I'll have to see when I get home if an actual C-C charger works better. At least the phone is in decent shape (some micro scratches/swirls in the front glass, only really noticeable under a spotlight). Yep, garbage charger. Reporting as a USB charger in Ampere, maxing out around 1A briefly. My old 5v/2A HP Touchpad charger with an Anker Micro USB cable and micro to C adapter is giving a solid 2A and is up 5% in charge in a minute already. sirbeefalot fucked around with this message at 20:54 on Jul 31, 2017 |

Ha mine just turned up too. Same Alcatel charger. Just left it in the box as soon as I saw it was A-C, I've got some decent USB-C chargers around as was on a Nexus 5x. Front glass looks good on mine, metal on the back seems a little scuffed.

Given that I only use the 3.5mm jack to line-in on my work computer, I wanted to reduce the connection to one cable into the phone instead of two. Given the apparent influx of USB-C only phones, I was hoping that use-case had gotten better served by now.

In the 18 months since the 5x and 6p came out, USB-C accessories have not gotten better, in fact, they might have gotten worse. Yay Nintendo for releasing a product that's selling millions upon millions while making GBS threads on the standard. Ditto for Samsung and Apple as well.
