Also it turns out that it's not an actual reprint since it comes with fewer containers than the original, which means a game tilted more towards short-term strategy if you're playing it 5p. Dang. Still, friend backed it after I showed him the posts. (He likes this thread too.) the ships are nice and while unnecessary, will be nice to look at while a different friend tries to tank the economy game after game.

Yeah, I played one game of Container and its economy is so different that I couldn't really wrap my head around it. Unfortunately the person who taught and owned the game didn't like, give any heads up about it, so the game was like 3-4 (I forget) people flailing about just doing actions with one guy actually knowing what he's doing, which didn't really help ingratiate the experience to us.

Weird, I've played exactly twice with other people who have only played once or twice and we didn't see a ton of flailing around. Some of us went nearly broke a couple of times, but we didn't crash the economy that badly and the games went pretty well. vv

I've heard a lot about it over the years and was interested in it but the price + shipping seems especially high in Canuckbucks. Speaking of, did the Argent guys get their poo poo sorted out with that one or is still rough too?

Not sure if you noticed, but it suggests Canadians don't use the Kickstarter, and just pre-order from BoardGameBliss. I'm on the fence. The gigantic ships seem weird; I feel like I'm paying for $30 worth of game and 7 pounds of detailed plastic I have no interest in. I would have definitely ordered at a lower price.

I'm backing Container because it has a hugely positive reputation, both here and elsewhere, and I'm eager to play it. I also am easily swayed by nice, unique components, but I didn't realize until just now with the above comments exactly HOW big the ships are. Over 7", apparently. That's insane. I love it.

Kruller posted:Unrelated to the very good game Orleans, assuming I have nothing for Race for the Galaxy, which expansions should I buy to start out? Expansions are: 1: The Gathering Storm 2: Rebel vs. Imperium 3: The Brink of War 4: Alien Artifacts 5: Xeno Invasion The first 3 form a trilogy -- you can play with 1, 1&2, or all 3 for a giant game. The theme is a galactic conflict between the Rebel Alliance (actual card from RvI) and the nefarious Imperium, builders of the Planet Buster. You should get into these expansions if you play Race a lot with the same crowd -- it makes things more interesting because there's so many more cards and because direct conflict is encouraged through the Takeover actions you can use vs. enemy planets if their military is lower than yours. #4 is a good one if you play Race with newer players -- it doesn't make the game more confusing for the most part, just adds more stuff to do. Ignore the Orb mini-game this set comes with, it sucks. But Alien Artifacts is my favorite because it's thematic and adds some fun cards without complicating things much. Xeno Invasion adds an optional mechanic where extragalactic monsters will take over planets if combined defenses aren't strong enough. Brutal! I haven't played this one but it's supposed to be for players who have played more Race, because the potential for analysis paralysis is strong. Also you definitely want to play the first 4 vs. Keldon's AI. http://keldon.net/rftg/

Well, so far I think my list of things to look for at Gen Con are: Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu Tragedy Looper (if Z Man has these at their booth) War of the Ring A demo for This War of Mine Maybe Mysterium? I'm really excited because Gen Con will be the first time in two years I've taken time off for something I wanna do.

There was a neat game kickstarted earlier this year called Dark is the Night. It's basically Hunt the Wumpus where a hunter equipped with limited arrows has to track and kill a monster moving in the shadows. Both have special powers to track/evade each other. Probably going to be ~$20 for fifteen minute hidden action game and it's listed at Gencon.

There's a KS for a new expansion for Flash Point: Fire Rescue called Tragic Events. While it adds new characters to choose from, the main draw is that it replaces the boring hotspot mechanic with fire and event decks that should hopefully add some theme and variation to what is admittedly a rather simple game. It's also including all the KS exclusives from previous expansions, like the Fire Prevention Specialist and the unique PoI''s. The game is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine and, with all the weird and wacky board games coming out on KS, it's almost relieving to see a simple expansion for a simple game.

Rulebook for the next Scythe expansion. Nothing earth shattering here, just a couple extra wrinkles added to the game. I'm really disappointed that each faction's airship model looks the same though. There is no longer term strategy. The winner is pretty clear at hour 1.5-2, it's just playing it out. The only differences between the long and short game are 1. the winner can add to his e-peen with another record high score for BGG and 2. the losers has to suffer though another hour of desperately trying to make something work from a losing position. What's the opinion of 5p not having a dud colour? With all colours highly valued by somebody does it lose something or gain something. I haven't totally decided myself since it's exciting to suss out the dud, but sucks if you get stuck with it as your starting industry.

Quick question for those that have played Pandemic Legacy: If I am playing 2 player, with each player using 2 characters, what starting hands should I use? start with 2 cards for 4 players, or 4 cards for 2 players? I know this is a small thing, I just do not want to gently caress anything up considering how we will end up...you know...destroying the board.

It is in no way a small thing! 2 cards for four players. Keep each player hand separate. You're playing 4 players but controlling two characters each with two humans, but in all respects it's a 4 player game.

Played Terraforming Mars for the first time tonight and it was a blast. It reminds me of Race for the Galaxy but the map and pvp cards make it much more interactive between players. The card-drafting especially at the beginning of each round really made you really care about what your opponents were doing. Other 'engine building' games I play I find I'm solely focused on my own cards and pray my combos out perform my friends at the end of the game. We played a 4 player game and were all first time players. I had the corp ability that let me use heat as money and found it really powerful as I stacked "increase heat and power production" activate cards at the start. Every round I think I had a 10-30 cash advantage over my friends. Main thing I noticed is you can't ignore 1 of the 3 endgame conditions because we maxed out oxygen much faster than sea and temperature, and my friend stacked a bunch of end-game oxygen cards that let him collect 3 animals a turn for 1 VP each. I manged to win by 2 points in the end with milestone and award VPs. The game's an instant favorite for me and my group. Only small criticism I have is the rule book is all over the place (and your opening hand + player board displays over a dozen resources and counters) but after taking an hour to figure out Turn 1 the game ran very smoothly. Can't wait to play again.
