We make portmanteaus when we see fit. Or we just steal the word from another language, like sauna. Or schadenfreude. Or portmanteau.

From the strips before I got the impression it's a clickbait rag or no particular political bent. Someone more versed in Zelda lore will probably correct me on that, though.

No, she's entirely right in her criticism of 50 shades. I recently read a snarky chapter-by-chapter breakdown and holy gently caress the messages that book sends are extremely troubling.

Abuse is cool and good as long as he loves you, kink is only for broken people and true love means non-kinky sex, all the various power dynamics that go along with abuse are great (he isolates me from friends/family, but that's great because I only need him!), using a safeword is somehow disrespectful to your partner (:psyduck:), etc.

Worst of all, the relationship is just difficult. They argue about EVERYTHING. Ana wants to drive her car, it sparks an argument. Ana isn't feeling super hungry, it sparks an argument. Ana wants to go to a friend's art show, it sparks an argument. Is this the fantasy, women? A dude who will argue with you about every goddamned thing you try to do?

It makes you really worry about the personal life of the author.

I mean, this may or may not be true but according to panels 1 and 2 she's not even writing about the book, she's trying to argue that BDSM is inherently anti-feminist which seems extremely Fun Police and probably slut-shaming

He's a socialist and a cheat (the Venzuelan equivalent of the Attorney General, one of the leaders of council in charge of running elections and the manufacturer of Venezuela's voting machines have accused him of falsifying the results of the recent election for a Constituent Assembly). CHE-AT doesn't parse easily as "cheat" as Ramirez intended, at least for me.

She's definitely talking about the movie's idea of BDSM and not just BDSM as a whole, because to call BDSM as a whole "men dominating women" is such a basic error that I refuse to accept that's what the author meant.

To me, it's very clear that the entire concept is framed around 50 shades and not just BDSM in general.

Let me just say that her idea of a "perfect" relationship says a LOT about her. Also, people who write Twilight fan fiction aren't "normal." :v:

I don't think she's ever given any indication that this is her idea of a perfect relationship or her personal fantasy or anything though. Certainly not from what I've read, she's dodges questions about it a lot in interviews, but she's pretty clearly not into any of this herself. It's just fiction. People tend to read more into and presume a lot more about the author based on what they write when it comes to romance/erotica though. FWIW I'm not defending her out of any kind of allegiance or as a fan or anything, this is just from doing a lot of reading about independent publishing success stories and what sells etc.

quote:

I am fascinated by BDSM, and fascinated as to why anyone would want to be in this lifestyle. Don’t get me wrong – I think it’s as hot as hell, and find Doms hot as hell. I met this guy recently who is a Dom… well… ‘nuff said about that – but he was hosed-up– boy, was he hosed up – and while I was talking to him, I thought, ‘I have written about you…’ It was weird. Having said that, he was nowhere near as good-looking or successful as Christian… but still.

Anyway, I digress. On a fantasy level for me, there’s something about Doms – how they act, how in control they are, how you can surrender yourself to one and not have to think about anything except them – that is very appealing… so I kind of started from there. Also, I wanted to explore what would happen if one partner didn’t want to be part of this lifestyle, and to see where that would take me. I had come across stories where Doms and willing Submissives had signed contracts, but I wanted to explore how a person who had never encountered that world before would react to one. I was determined to write a story that involved a proper, detailed contract… and Christian as a fantasy guy kind of evolved from all that.

When I said not into it, I meant as a BDSM lifestyle thing (which is the people she gets the most criticism from). As a giggly fantasy sure, it's a fairly common one, which is part of why her books are so popular. Whatever floats your boat and all that. I'll shut up about non toons in the toon thread now.
