I wish I could still enjoy war movies. I've seen so many as a child, I'm completely burned-out on the genre.

Unless it's movies about wars among stars. Those I loving love.

Joking aside, I am also more weary of war films nowadays than I used to be, but it's no fault of the films themselves. A lot of them are really good. It's the culture that comes around war films that really makes me uncomfortable. You know how Rich and Mike described Rogue One as Star Wars porn for 30 year olds to masturbate to? War films, intentionally or not, cater to a similar audience of jingoists and old people either trying to get a high off of patriotic hero worship, or watch the films out of some weird obligation to recognize war movies as being "important" cinema. I wouldn't be nearly so disgusted with a film like American Sniper if it didn't have the utterly toxic community surrounding it touting it as having patriotic value and deriding anyone who criticized it for being a lazy Clint Eastwood hackjob as un-American.

Putting Dean Norris and Bruce Willis in the same movie is a bold choice.

A bald choice even.

But seriously, they kind of look alike. Unless they bring it up in the movie, it can be really distracting.

In the trailer when Dean Norris asks what the killer looked like, I thought she was going to say that it looked like him.

Old German film The Bridge is also pretty good for this. I think Stalingrad took alot of cues from it. It's even more about the pointless waste though, because at least in the battle of Stalingrad there was an actual war objective. The titular bridge in the Bridge is just farcically unimportant. Also it's only about 90 minutes long.

Also I will keep suggesting the Beast (of war) from 1988 as a really good war movie about a tank. And the superior movie to come out that year about the war in Afghanistan.

I liked Hurt Locker, but Generation Kill is still the best thing Iraq 2 has produced. Especially liked the AMERICA #1 PATRIOTS raging because it didn't make marines look like knights in shining armor, until actual marines came out to say "yeah it's pretty much accurate".

What's the old quote, "There's no such thing as an anti-war film"?

I think "Deer Hunter" is though. I didn't much like it because of the interminable wedding video footage, but I think it's a rare war movie that doesn't accidentally glorify war for the sake of action scenes.

Not a whole movie, but there's an awesome scene at the beginning of "Lincoln" where troops have basically a giant knife fight in a shallow stream that sets the stakes for ending the war really well.

If they're gonna do war movies they need to focus less on brave american heroes on the western front and do a few movies of the hardcore front, the east, with Russia. That's where the war was decided... Two thirds of the german army was defeated there, not on the western pussy rear end front. Then they pushed back all the way to Berlin and fuckin took the city.

Insane numbers of russians died in that meatgrinder. It was a huge front. I've seen like, one hollywood movie about it? The one with Jude Law as a sniper

I can't remember any other big ones

Russia already produced a thousand of these, some are pretty good, but if you think american WWII movies reek of nationalism and rose-coloured glasses and worship of the "greatest generation" they got nothing on Russian war movies.

You think people don't know there was an eastern front that was bigger and bloodier than the rest? Also, Hollywood is in America. When you have such multifaceted wars as WW2 you aren't necessarily limited to just making media about what's the biggest or most important arena. One of the most important factors becomes what is most relatable to your audience and the ones producing the content. For Hollywood that is going to be America and Britain, Eastern Front fans might just have to deal with it.

Also your statement seems kind of close to the sentiment of many who have read up on the Eastern Front and then seem to begin to assume that the Western Front and America and Britain's contributions were negligible by comparison. That's a fallacy. If you discount the huge importance of Britain not getting knocked out of the war in 1940 and the massive economic aid provided by the United States to both Britain and the Soviets, then there's still the fact that from 1944-1945 the Western Allies destroyed the German airforce, crippled Axis oil production, and tied down large numbers of elite mechanized and armored German formations that might have made a significant contribution in slowing down the Soviets in the East during the same period (the proportion of armored and mechanized formations was higher in both Italy, where there were many Panzergrenadier and weird LW and FJ divisions and regiments, and on the Western Front than in the East (which from 1944 received lower priority for such reinforcements). The fighting in Normandy and later in the forests in eastern France and Belgium had casualty rates that matched that of many Eastern Front battles, and from the invasion 'till the German surrender on 8 May, the Western Allies killed some 1-1.5 million Germans and captured millions more while suffering around 600-700 000 casualties themselves.

You probably know this. But just because the Eastern Front was more bloody and more important in deciding the war that doesn't make the Western Front either unimportant or unworthy of mention by comparison.

As an American I dig the hell out of the Eastern front in fiction so I wish Hollywood would get the memo.

I mean Enemy At the Gates was a fairly big hit and that is like, very sadly, the only loving Eastern Front movie that I can recall Hollywood putting out. All I remember about it now is Ed Harris being awesome and people loving in a fallout tunnel.
