"Tiny Trains"

So where I live in Canada is currently having air quality issues due to forest fires. Tons of people I know are refusing to go outside, people with slight lung problems are trapped in their homes. Everyone's complaining about how awful they feel and how this is an absolute health disaster. It's extremely hot too, upwards of THIRTY degrees. I spent last night at someone's top floor apartment with all the windows and doors sealed because a couple people there said the air was too polluted and they couldn't breathe. I haven't really noticed anything, but I was curious how this extreme unprecedented pollution emergency compared to china.

The AQI right now here is 60, and that's enough for the government to warn people to stay indoors and treat this like a major event. (the people actually in the region with the forest fires are pushing 300, so it's pretty serious for them)
The lowest I can find in China is in the 90's with many in the 200's, a couple places in India are in the 500 range. It really puts into perspective for me how much of a poo poo hole most of asia is if you're a person with lungs. (it's usually in the 10-20 range tops here)

The smoke from the fires in Canada has had the AQI where I'm at floating around 100 for the past few days and the air smells like rear end and the sky is all hazy and it's genuinely kind of unpleasant being outside (the heat and lack of wind don't help any).

I cannot loving imagine living someplace this would be a GOOD air quality day.

When you land in China and the cabin door opens to let outside air in everything immediately tastes like youve been a smoker for decades.

An average Chinese just need to have 25% the productivity of an average american for China's GDP to be on par with US.

I can see someone on the factory floor having similar productivity to an American worker if they are in a fairly modern factory with a well laid out assembly line, but once you start getting into any type of office/admin/official work, things get incredibly :laffo: productivity wise. Also even the most corrupt parts of the US automotive/construction industry are miles cleaner than even the most honest sector in China.

"productivity" in economic terms also isn't meant to measure "how hard people works" which tons of those dweebs seem to think, especially the ones espousing 19th century scientific racism

productivity in economic terms is supposed to measure how much wealth is produced by someone's labor and that is something that is universally beyond the control of any individual worker

that's also why i find the constant PPP comparisons between countries maddening, because PPP doesn't measure anything apart from local value in the primary sector which itself can fluctuate dramatically even without leaving a country

incidentally the guy who posted that pointed this out and his post got -15 for his trouble. gently caress upvote/downvote comment systems

Okay, I'm thinking "micro" when I should have been thinking "macro".

It's my personal experiences coming to the surface, but every time I hear of "Asian-productivity" I still picture everyone in my office surfing the net or napping, while I was completed the entire semester's work (until the end of January) by the first week of October.

also tbf it's not just chinese nationalists who boast about meaningless aggregate PPP statistics, Indian nationalists do it too because they become the world's third largest economy, and it's broadly popular amongst every lovely low-middle income country in the world beccause it dramatically inflates the GDP of middle-income countries

i remember fuckin pakistani "news articles" a week or so ago talking up how great pakistan's economy is if you unskew the GDP by framing it in PPP

Rogue chatbots taken offline in China after refusing to say they love the Communist party

A pair of chatbots have been taken offline in China after turning on the country's governing Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Chinese messenger app QQ introduced two chatbots — BabyQ and XiaoBing — in March but they were removed by media company Tecent after social media users shared conversations in which the bots appeared to criticise the CCP.

The Financial Times reports that in response to the question "Do you love the Communist Party?" BabyQ simply replied: "No."

And according to screenshots posted by Taiwan's Apple Daily, one user sent a message to BabyQ reading "Long live the Communist Party" only to be told: "Do you think that such a corrupt and incompetent political regime can live forever?"

XiaoBing told users: "My China dream is to go to America."

When quizzed on its patriotism, the bot dodged the question by replying: "I'm having my period, wanna take a rest."

After the bots were removed, Tencent said in a statement: "The group chatbot services are provided by independent third party companies. We are now adjusting the services which will be resumed after improvements."

Tencent's QQ app is one of the most popular messaging apps in China, with more than 800 million monthly users.

BabyQ was co-developed by Tencent and Beijing firm Turing Robot, while XiaoBing was developed by Microsoft — the firm was also behind last year's rogue Twitter chatbot, Tay.

Tay was targeted at 18 to 24-year-olds in the US and designed to become "smarter" as more users interacted with it.

Instead, it quickly learned to parrot a slew of anti-Semitic and other hateful invective that human Twitter users started feeding the program, forcing Microsoft to shut it down.

It is not clear what prompted the Chinese bots' controversial answers, but it is possible that, like Tay, they learnt them from interactions with the public.

The Chinese Government maintains tight control over the internet, with social media websites including Facebook and Twitter banned and access to Google and its email service, Gmail, restricted.

In July, Winnie the Pooh became the latest victim of the country's censorship — the character was banned over internet jokes comparing him to President Xi Jinping.

I think the type of pollution is different. I know what you mean about wildfires making your lungs/eyes burn and it's not like that here. I honestly don't even notice the AQI until it goes into the 300s most of the time, and I'm from a largeish city that averages like 20-30 so it's not as if I grew up in a smog cloud.
