... okay, I *do* have a dumb dwarf-logic workaround suggestion Make the launcher out of a material that evaporates quickly, and ideally they'll get one throw and then the launcher will puff into smoke before the battle closes. it's super dumb

That's not dumb, it's a drat wildcard, and I love it. Do an entire gimmick tourney based on this. The more you spend on your arms and armor, the higher the melting point.

You might need to do awful things to creatures' base temperatures if the arena temperature isn't amenable to it, but that allows for race-based durability which is exciting.

Well, my guy has a 100% win rate for the two times I tested him against my teammates' fighters (that have points spent on them, anyways), so now I don't have to feel guilty about my horrible gimmick build. But we are definitely not going to win this tournament.
