Anarchism is great for that, because it keeps moving it's goal to this kind of impossible ideal, to avoid being lumped in with the ML's. "We want to get rid of all authority (except the legitimate kind), we're not the bad guys like communists", etc etc. But that movement simultaneously makes its connection to reality more and more tenuous, and so makes it easier to just drop entirely. Worse, you get to contextualize that abandonment as a personal 'coming of age' story. And there's nothing more compelling to people, than the stories they tell themselves, about themselves.

Not surprising tbh. The USSR wasn't popular at the time of the collapse but in most cases the former satellite nations are way worse off, especially Russia itself. And the CPC is straight up state capitalism now. I dunno how many people in China like that but it can't be many outside of the Party and the petit bourgeois
