Mark Fisher (RIP) got it right back in 2013.quote:The first configuration is what I came to call the Vampires’ Castle. The Vampires’ Castle specialises in propagating guilt. It is driven by a priest’s desire to excommunicate and condemn, an academic-pedant’s desire to be the first to be seen to spot a mistake, and a hipster’s desire to be one of the in-crowd. The danger in attacking the Vampires’ Castle is that it can look as if – and it will do everything it can to reinforce this thought – that one is also attacking the struggles against racism, sexism, heterosexism. But, far from being the only legitimate expression of such struggles, the Vampires’ Castle is best understood as a bourgeois-liberal perversion and appropriation of the energy of these movements.

The biggest difference for me between Stewart at his height during the Bush years and Bee/Noah et al now is that it felt that Stewart was targeting the political culture that had created the situation. Stewart's primary target back then was milquetoast centrist "discourse" media, like Crossfire, and it seemed he regularly brought up how worthless the Democratic Party was. Bee and Noah feel like they're very in step with the liberal political machine, pushing centrist democrat narratives and backing Clinton and Obama whenever possible.

# ? Aug 9, 2017 00:16 |

Exactly, Stewart's show in the Bush era had an anti-establishment feel. Bee and Noah are anti-Trump but very comfortable with the establishment Dems, comedy works a lot better when you're anti-establishment and making fun of both parties when they do dumb poo poo.

jon stewart got less funny and more angry by the end, but he was always cynical. the only "comedy" pundit who's like that now is john oliver, and Last Week Tonight is late-era stewart daily show in terms of quality. it's informative, but you expect more laughs because he's capable of it

Gonna use this article as a jumping off point, so bare with me, but again, I think this is the reason why types are susceptible to the "GLOBAL WARMING IS A HOAX" talking point. I present to you this article http://lifehacker.com/measure-and-offset-your-carbon-footprint-with-a-new-onl-1797648355 quote:Fast Company reports that the nonprofit Conservation International has put out a new online tool for figuring out your carbon footprint. Spend a few minutes answering questions—home size, how often you drive, how many flights you take per year—and you can measure, in tons, the carbon produced yearly by your daily activities or by an event or trip. This isn’t the first online carbon calculator, but this one incorporates new research about diet, as well as advances like hybrid and electric vehicles to give you an accurate figure—and, crucially, options for what to do. Jesus loving christ. I mean good for you if you have a job where you don't need to drive, but for many, many, many Americans? That's not exactly a viable option. quote:Climate information without an action plan can end up just being fearmongering. Knowledge is only power if you act on it. When the Conservation International calculator tells you your carbon footprint, you’re also given a dollar amount for offsetting it. Carbon offsets allow you to neutralize your carbon emissions with a donation to a project that reduces emissions somewhere else in the world (often in a developing nation). Why does this person have to give money to this charity? Why can't we be calling for a higher taxes on corporations that pollute or for higher regulations? Who the gently caress has money to spare for this poo poo right now? quote:While systemic change—at the level of governments and big corporations—is crucial to fighting climate change, individual action can have an important impact, and it’s something you can do right now. Last week, The Atlantic wrote about a study that found that if all Americans replaced the beef in their diets with beans—not even all meat, just beef!—we’d be 46 to 74 percent of the way to meeting the U.S.’s 2020 emission goals. I'm not giving up my steak, rear end in a top hat. I'm not against eating Vegan for a few meals or anything of that note (Hell I've made a few meals cuz they can be tasty/healthy), but the argument that suddenly it's people with no money/no power causing this is infuriating. I hate these loving types of people.

The anti-car people are funny because it's never gonna fuckin happen and it's such a waste of effort because getting people to buy electric cars and switching power generation to renewables would be so much easier. Do you want to get to zero carbon emissions or do you just want to get people really angry for no reason?

Plutonis posted:Decent, fast, comfortable and renewable public transportation could also work. No. It won't ever work in most places. Public transportation works in a very narrow set of requirements that 97% of the country doesn't meet. Where it makes sense, it should happen, where it doesn't, the best solution is electric cars. Only people that are out of touch or vindictive think that a single solution works for the entire nation.
