I guess the CODE has a slightly different backplate, and a luminous layer behind the keys to go with the lighting. The CODE defaults with lovely thin ABS caps, WASD has options or even no caps.

This is the first time in years I've had something from MD not ship on their shipping date. Do you just not "get it", or something?

Yeah, the WASD or CODE keyboards have the "standard" layout (as in 6.25u spacebar, 1.25u mods, etc.) so you can pretty much take your pick of keycap sets out there as even the most basic 104-key sets will accommodate that. And obviously a good selection of Cherry MX types. If you're buying direct from WASD, it may be a good idea to pick up some spare parts, most particularly some stabiliser inserts, maybe some springs and clips, because you'll be glad you did if you swap out keycaps and break one of the drat things because of your enormous trunk fingers. (Same goes for any other keyboard with MX switches.) The other trick with the inserts is if they feel a bit loose in the cap, use some plastic wrap or something to make it a little tighter.

So if the CODE caps are so bad, can you customize the same options on a regular WASD board and then add better caps?

Nope. It's as-is. So all that said ... some people are totally happy with them. And I know one guy who owns one and insists the paint hasn't come off his caps (turns them into translucent lit smears) so I don't know what we're doing differently. I did like the keyboard for years, and it had a nice solid "deliberate" feeling which carried through the design as well. It's just that when I finally switched to PBT I thought "wow this is better". Absolutely nothing stopping you from getting the CODE and then grabbing a keycap set that attracts your eye from somewhere later. (But as people have said, that black Vortex PBT set seems to suit the CODE better than any other. I used gradient blue caps with shine-through legends, but the luminous layer behind the caps looked "wrong" against them, like a non-matching off-light blue.

LochNessMonster posted:Razer has a 'bad rep' because they target a gamer audience and price their products accordingly. The only 'gaming'/Razer thing i own is the hilariously named Blackwidow X Tournament Edition Chroma. It fit my needs (tkl, mx, metal, rgb, mac support, available in Europe) perfectly. It's a little too aggressively designed, particularly with the light up front logo, but aside from that it's great. I like there's no frame and it feels super weighty. The switches aren't exactly the same as Cherry, but they're close enough it'd be tough to tell in a blind test. I grabbed some clear caps for my CMD keys, and shifted the 'alt' key one spot, so it's got a sensible OSX layout. They were a little expensive, but it's super cool when the light hits them - they're much brighter than the other keys due to their position and transparency. If you want a TKL mech board, with RGB at a reasonable price it's honestly a pretty good deal. Particularly because it's so full-featured and you can buy it without having to wait months for massdrop/shipping issues. Sometimes buying stuff from a real company is really preferable.

Not all ABS keycaps are garbage (thinking Das,) but those that come as stock on the CODE sure are. Thin, clacky, they ping and feel cheap/light. Vortex caps are cheap and feel great, and I wouldn't get a CODE w/o getting them too.

I haven't been able to find any Vortex PBT caps for a lot of the European (specifically, Swedish/Nordic) layouts. Am I not looking in the right place? Or are there other caps I should be using, if I were to order a CODE?

I got my Ducky One RGB in and I think one of the LEDs R in RGB doesn't work I'm debating if I should call the Amazon people and have it exchanged or if I really care since the keycaps I'm getting in September from massdrop don't have windows anyways so it's more about the background lighting edit: other than that this keyboard is great, very solid and i love the white colour. i think i must have bought it from mechanicalkeyboards.com's amazon store because it came in a MK box, so maybe i'll just bother them and see what they can do for me FAT32 SHAMER fucked around with this message at 19:07 on Aug 10, 2017 |

How are Corsair's keyboards with Cherry Reds? I just spilled on my old Razer BlackWidow, killing it and I need to get a replacement. I was looking at the K68, since it has spill protection and I'm a klutz. I want something with a full layout and good mechanical switches at least. Problem is I'm in Canada, so there's not much available from the suggestion in the OP. Are Reds a good go to switch for gaming/lots of word processing?

I had a Corsair K70 RGB and I will confirm their build quality is tops, they're a little overpriced for what you get though. Reds are a good switch if you want the lightest possible keypress and don't want any feedback from the key.
