It's not even just LG that's failing at this now. Even the high end Sony TVs have stopped doing reverse telecine properly with the current firmware.

I've found dejudder of 1 comes very close to matching correct 24fps cadence without introducing SOE, but I can't use it on animation as the artifacts are too severe.

That's a shame, the Sony screens were supposed to be the best for this specific thing

Yeah, I've just found settings that work as best as possible for the majority of my watching. I know everything will go through a receiver soon which essentially kills different modes depending on input, so have to just learn to live with any issues. I'm way beyond the nitpicking part of ownership anyway.

Pretty much this. There's two sticks; a 1080p one ($35) and a 4k one ($70). The 4k one doesn't add much other than...well, 4k. If you're just doing youtube tv, the cheaper one should be fine. It'll take up an HDMI port and power. It's setup via app and dead simple. From there you just click the cast button and select the name of the chromecast and that's all there really is to it.

Sort of. There are a bunch of us WD goons, but the firmware itself was outsourced. The goon you're thinking of (beefofages) was definitely in charge of handing off all the bugs to the firmware team, though.

It's worth it to note that the Chromecast Ultra includes the power adapter that has an Ethernet port. So, if you envision wanting to go wired, you may want to go with the upper model (it is still cheaper to go with the normal and buy the adapter later, but you obviously won't get 4k down the line.)

And that power adapter is $15 by itself direct from Google (I highly recommend it if you're like me and have Ethernet everywhere).

By the way, thanks everyone for the Harmony advice. I got it set it up and it's working well. Some kinks here and there, particularly with Home (which I'm using for our way more than I thought) but I like it. The remote is far tinier than I thought it would be but laid out well.

Also thanks Bull for the IFTTT advice for the Home for it. Completely necessary.

Does anyone know if there's a quantifiable difference in quality between HBO delivered through, say, HBO GO vs Amazon Prime vs Sling? Game of Thrones via Sling on my LG B6 (WebOS) has some pretty bad quality problems in dark scenes, and I was wondering if it'd be better via the Amazon app.

To answer my own question: Amazon HBO is like night and day compared to Sling. Like, you could actually see what was happening during the night. I think it's because it's using the HBO Go streaming model, as opposed to a cable-like HBO "channel" - the Amazon UI showed individual episodes to watch, and the GoT episode just appeared at 9est.

Amazon, consistently, has some of the highest quality streams out there. Their back end is very good.

I watched American Gods with a Starz sub through Amazon and was blown away by the quality.

Really, the only reason why I still have HBO through my cable company is it makes it earlier to share my sub with family members and HBO Go is pretty close to Amazon quality.

Any of the other premium channels? Amazon is always going to be my first choice.

Not exactly the right thread for it, but has there been any more talk about a Vudu app for the Apple TV? It's the one thing I don't like about the Apple TV, because I share a Vudu account with my brother, where we both put all of our digital codes in for movies we own, and we have a massive library now. I know I can AirPlay to the Apple TV, but it would be so much better with an app. Googling just tells me, "It's coming" or whatever, but that's been the line for a while now.

edit: And of course, right after I post, I finally find an article with more info. Coming in the fall, apparently.

Vudu participates with Disney Movies Anywhere, so any movie with a digital copy for like the past 10 years should redeem and be available on Vudu. Hell, I was able to redeem some old rear end iTunes only codes, link the iTunes to DMA, and then have the movie show up in Vudu, Amazon, and Google Play.

Marvel isn't mentioned, neither is Lucasfilm - conspicuously, since Pixar was.

Marvel Studios has a separate development deal with Netflix anyway, it's not a pay for pre-produced content, Netflix *is* producing the content. Not to say the Mouse House wouldn't put the hammer down at some point but it's not happening in the near future.

Hey, I have a question about DirecTV Now.

It appears to hold an advantage over Sling (which I have now) in that it carries broadcast networks in HD. The only reason I have cable at all right now is so I can watch live sports -- digital antennas apparently get super lovely reception from my apartment, so it's the only way. But it's SD-only, because I don't want to pay Comcast one red cent more than I have to. If I get DirecTV Now, and ditch Sling and basic cable, I save money and theoretically get broadcast networks in HD again.

DirecTV Now doesn't have CBS, but apparently that's getting fixed soon??? Everything seems good except I found this while looking at the DirecTV plans.

This would seem to indicate that DirecTV Now comes with NBC on-demand content, but can't stream the channel live. But NBCSN IS available live. Same deal with Fox vs Fox Sports. ABC doesn't appear to have a Sports offshoot, and I dunno if CBS does.

I don't have much experience with each network's "sports" offshoot. Can someone tell me what happens if a local NFL game goes out on NBC? Would it also be on NBCSN? If not, if it would be only on the main NBC broadcast, could I use DirecTV Now to see it "on demand" while it's still happening? In either case, what happens if a game is on ABC? Thanks in advance for any help.

Last year I had PSVue in an area where none of the local channels were live. I was able to use my PSVue login to watch local NFL games through the Fox Sports Go app and the NBCSports app. I was totally out of luck with CBS games.

Sports on ABC are generally available through WatchESPN since they're all Disney.

Edit: I just remembered what they were doing. Someone told me they made copies of the VHS cassettes and would print labels and sell them at a flea market. Don't know if that's true but yeah. Stealing clamshells was a thing.

Current setup: HDHomeRun Connect, one PC acting as Plex Pass server and DVR, two TVs with Roku sticks.

This setup has not been that reliable, the PC and Rokus operate on WIFI. Not sure if its weather related, but some recordings run like hell and I can hear the fans going full blast when the Rokus are pulling from the server for DVR content.

I'm looking for alternative DVR options. Annoyingly, my wife loves Jeopardy, which is broadcast on Fox locally (45069). This means only OTA broadcasts and uploaded /torrent versions are available. I could do an RSS feed to download, but still need Plex to get it to the Roku. I will pick up Sling again for college football season, but their DVR switches to the national feed over Jeopardy (I think). Are there any other options? Looks like there is the Tablo and Tivo Bolt, but I don't want the $200 upfront lifetime cost, sure as hell not paying $15/month for Tivo.

One reason for ditching the current setup is Plex does not play well on networks with Access Points, the server gets confused and does not make direct connections, limiting bandwidth to one of the Rokus.

Are you using 802.11ac? The Connect is not recommended to be used on anything other 802.11ac networks if going wireless anywhere in the chain since there just isn't enough bandwidth. One thing to remember with 802.11 wireless networking in general is it's a half-duplex medium that uses CTS/CTR for traffic management. The rule of thumb is to divide reported bandwidth by 2 and divide that result by the number of active clients and that's your real available bandwidth for any one client device. That's not *quite* true for streaming situation since the client/server data payloads are asymmetric in terms of payload size. But that general "keep dividing by 2" is good enough since you want to err more on the conservative size when determining bandwidth capabilities.

My PC is also my PLEX server and it's wireless as well, but I've got it on an 802.11ac network. All the other devices (Shield TV, ATV 4thGen, HDHR Connect) are using GigE. I have zero issues with OTA DVR with PLEX.

I seriously don't understand why the rights are negotiated such that you can only watch some of the channel's programming.
