Of course there's also a reason people have been saying for decades that the democratic party is where social movements go die. The focus on federal politics over state politics makes this especially bad but both parties have sort of managed to make themselves the only legitimate voices in a way (some states don't even allow thirds on the ballot at this point afaik), especially given how much the federal system distorts voices to a point that makes even parliamentary westminster systems look more democratic. yeah, i guess it's easy to forget how dire third parties are in your system i'm kind of afraid of how totally the gop might wreck the dems before they either start paying attention to the left or die and let a new party emerge i guess the tea party is instructional; except they had the backing of big donors and therefore had a huge advantage getting the gop to pay attention
