aparmenideanmonad posted:I mean, black monolith and goblin city are pretty much the opposite in terms of optimal builds. Yeah, if you're running a bunch of low ranged def 2 handers, it can be tough. But I've beaten the city with a BM squad, and I've never beaten BM with a gobbo squad. As long as I go in with a few pro archers and the gob ambition reward, I can usually do it in one go. Goblins are just way easier to kill (nearly all units are one shots with a great sword), they don't do much damage, they can be injured, and they have morale. One guy with the goblin talisman can pretty easily turn the fight all by himself as long as you have some other bros to play poisoned arrow magnet and don't get hosed by lucky armor-bypassing dagger rolls. Apart from that, I found controlling damage distribution among my bros a lot easier during the Monolith fight, despite the high number of polearms and miasma going around. Goblins may not do much damage individually apart from Puncture and Overseers that decide to fight instead of whipping their underlings, but it's hard to get a bro out of trouble once their armor has been whittled down and they start taking HP damage due to everyone potentially starting their activation entangled and the Fatigue buildup due to constantly having to try and break free. I've always retreated once losses seemed inevitable, not because I thought I might actually lose the fight (although that of course doesn't mean I absolutely wouldn't have), but so far I just haven't found a way of ensuring that I don't lose several people there. Meanwhile, the Black Monolith fight could have gone down without a death if my reserve greatsword bro had maybe not failed all those Resolve checks/rallied successfully/I had just let a nearby bro with Rotation Recover in time to bail him out. e: Team comp may be an issue of course, since I mainly build my bros for Orc hunting, which is closer to fighting Ancient Dead than Goblins in many ways. That would be cool, I was always a little bit disappointed that your effective weapon choices are so limited once you hit the midgame since there's almost no reason to use 1h swords or flails and 1h spears are something you might have 1 or 2 of if you particularly value spearwall. And then 2h axes aren't really all that good either so you basically have 1h maces and axes, 2h hammers, greatswords and polearms (of which, longaxes have some utility and billhooks hit the hardest but warscythes are pretty much the best) However it is really fun to use an entire army of maces and literally beat the poo poo out of orcs so they're too tired to hit you back.

Low fatigue cost and accuracy bonus means you can hit more reliably and continue attacking for quite a while past where other weapons would require you to rest.

Agreed, I try to have a high ini/melee skill sword juggler in my front line against orcs, or at least to insert once the spearwall cracks. Getting back at waves of orc youth/berserkers/warriors is a priority, but he's good against any kind of enemy really. E: save maybe ancient dead, but gently caress those guys. Yea I have a few sword users who are also dagger specialists with quick hands, recommended by many other people in this thread and they're very effective. Swords against raiders, orc/undead low lvl trash, and goblins; daggers vs everything else in heavy armor. With shield expert, brawny, and battle forged they're very durable, dependable, and functional against all enemies. Does anyone else use Ancient Tower Shields? They have more ranged defense than heater shields for a fatigue and durability trade-off and also look cool. I put them on my biggest tanks, and although I've never messed around with the taunt perk, I plan on trying it in conjunction with these tower shield bros. How do you guys protect your ranged bros? I go basic mail plus closed coif unless it's a slow slog where they have to follow a shieldwall, then I go heavier, but usually no vision pen higher than -2. Also, what exactly are the zone rules for spearwalling? I just activated spearwall and misclicked, moving the bro next to a wiedergänger( that wasn't stunned or broken, mind you), and still he could repulse other enemies that moved into him, which I thought was impossible. Can someone clarify when and how spearwall works?

I think that spear mastery lets you keep it going with an adjacent enemy and it might only be broken when an enemy successfully moves adjacent to your bro.

Heaviest armour I can give them, no penalty on for vision on the headwear, they have nine lives and steel brow instead. If they get hit by a bandit in the head, they usually won't take enough damage to be oneshot, if they take enough damage to normally get oneshot, they instead get taken to 1hp, they can then run the gently caress away.

I tend to go pretty light because my ranged bros run into fatigue trouble in extended fights due to me wanting to do a lot of quick shots for overwhelm, and berserk often letting them fire three quick shots a turn. Basic mail plus closed coif is pretty much my standard, no vision penalty so they can snipe enemy archers/necromancers if needed. In return I usually give them iron brow (actually I usually give everyone Iron Brow), Dodge, and Nimble (sometimes anticipation as well but I think dodge is better) which has done a good job keeping them alive so far.

I don't run any defense perks at all, and they only wear medium armor, basic mail (actually half of them are in artifact light armor now but its not really all that much better) and closed coif. I do tend to pump Ranged Defense every level, though. That combined with Overhwhelming the other guys archers combined with shield dudes in front seems to have kept them mostly alive so far. But they need to be able to kill necromancers and enemy snipers, and they can't do that if they're wearing head armor that reduces their vision. And I desperately need all those perk points since there are so many requirements for a good archer. I also tend to start battle by falling back far enough to put them on high/firm ground if its available. Bullseye, Quick Hands, Bow Mastery, Overwhelm, Berserk, Recover, and Bags and Belts are all non-optional. Taking a defensive perk would mean giving up one of Killing Frenzy, Crossbow Master, or Brawny and... is it really worth it? The best defense is killing the enemy before they kill you. Now, I've been considering giving up Crossbow Master for *gifted*, because an extra 4% attack accuracy (plus more ranged defense and initiative) seems like a big deal in terms of 'killing them before they can kill me', but stuff like iron brow or something seems to have questionable utility... I also have six archers at any given time and do most of my recruit churning looking for new ones so I might also see my archers as a bit more expendable than most people do. If you don't run a lot of archers, a defensive strategy based on overwhelming firepower might be less effective.

The reason I give my guys closed mail coifs and basic mail is so I can give them nimble at the same time, but I might consider heavy mail+steel brow and 9 lives instead, it sounds efficient! E: and word on the defensive barrage. Just having 3-4 experienced archers lets me pincushion a lot of opponents who manage to flank or get through.

Okay so I have five archers but a part of me is really tempted to diversify now that I am so late game. I am thinking four dedicated crossbow guys with fear/crippling based builds, wearing heavy armor, wielding overseer crossbows and gently caress initiative. Have them also specialize in throwing. They dont need overwhelm, bow mastery, bags and belts or berserk anymore. Probably not killing frenzy either. Then four dedicated overwhelm archers with all of those for picking off the wounded and debuffing those who get close. 8 ranged dudes is a reasonable enough number for most fights right? Then four great sword/spear/dagger wielders to hold them off as long as possible and then deal with anyone that gets close. Maybe give them Bags and Belts plus an axe and a hammer too since inventory slots become fatigue free. Let them hit with whichever situationally does maximum damage. Man I wish I could respec perks. I dont suppose anyone knows if its possible to edit them in the save files? GlyphGryph fucked around with this message at 21:29 on Aug 12, 2017 |

I believe it's possible to remove perks but it takes more than an hour or two to get used to the hex editing procedure and you'd have to seriously invest your time in studying the steam guide on it. I don't think you can share save files for others either i.e they don't show up.

I used this guide: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=926707194 What I did to respec: Open hex editor, read save. Search for name or title of the bro to edit (text string). That'll probably take you to his biography. Search for "human" before that (so search backwards), which will take you more or less to the beginning of the bro's data. Search forward again for the perk (hexadecimal now) you want to get rid of and replace it with another one.

Aside from that you just have to find a way to get a high accuracy brother next to them.

This is how I deal with geists. First: Archers attack them. This isn't likely to kill them, but it changes their AI from "wait behind for several turns" to "rush out ahead of everyone else immediately". Which makes the first batch pretty trivial to kill. Then, I'll have any high resolve flanks swing wide. They tend to come up along either side of the enemy and it's important to get in close and fast. Try to get behind the enemy to target any geists that left themselves open. I also have a dedicated ghost killer (among his other duties). He's got the immunity-to-fear necklace and carries a sword. Hopefully he's in the battle, makes things easier. Finally, I have everyone else cluster around my bannerman so he can Rally the Troops every turn, and try to cut through enemies as quickly as possible so I can start advancing on the geists themselves.

I'm almost at the stage of wanting two Rally bro's with pikes for giest battles just so my line isn't half out of the range. Too bad you can only get one banner.

Also, does anyone know how long it takes for the fourth crisis to start? I've got a save at day 380 and haven't even gotten a warning. This is around 60 days after the third crisis ended. I kind of want to see round two of the Noble War, but that's really all I'm still interested in, so if it would take another 50 days for the game to start another crisis that would be it for that save.

Ugh I'm so bad at actually playing this in ironman. I get attached to my bros and then end up alt+f4ing when they die. However this means that I am not really getting much better at the game, so I continually lose guys. In my current campaign I've got some core bros up to level 8-9ish, with a bunch of mid level guys. Starting to get mail hauberks and decent helmets for everyone. Any tips for keeping bros alive during this stage of the game? I find my frontliners on the flanks tend to get surrounded when I'm outnumber, then murdered. I've been trying to keep spear guys in those positions so they can spearwall, but it doesn't always help. My low level bros die the most of course, they seem pretty useless at this stage and hard to level up.
