Had a check-up at the vet today. My fiancee went out of town for work, and Nicky took it very badly, and hasn't been eating enough. Blood work shows renal abnormalities this time. We're unsure if it's simply due to the stress (of this absence or her previous experience with the pet sitter) and lack of nutrition, or if her kidneys are starting to shut down. Fiancee gets home tomorrow, thank goodness. We have a liquid supplement to give her every six hours for her kidneys and avian baby formula (which thankfully, she ate voluntarily when I mixed some up for her when we got back) to try and get her enough calories and proper nutrition. I do not look forward to syringe feeding her the liquid supplement, but if it saves her, it will be worth it. The vet wanted to keep her at the clinic to ensure she would get everything she needed, but it was ultimately decided that because Nicky already fears abandonment from past re-homing and neglect and it's almost certainly one cause of her current state that I would take her back home, and we would try to care for her ourselves. God, I hope we can. Only a few days after her one year adopt-iversary, I find myself wondering how good a caretaker and companion I am to Nicky, but determined to be the best one I can be.

Birds are a humongous pain in the rear end. You are doing really great taking care of Nicky. You're meeting her needs as best you can. If she has kidney failure, that's in no way your fault. Her not eating is also not your fault. You are taking her to the vet and doing your absolute best, which means that you're doing right by Nicky. My best wishes for you and your tiny dinosaur friend, I hope she gets better quickly!

Some toy reviews, sorry for lack of pictures to break it up Spinning Dancer http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/spinning-dancer Big, solid, lots of satisfyingly crunchy parts. There was cuttlefish bone on there apparently but it fell off very easily before it was attached to the cage. You'd be able to attach more things later when all chewed up so it will last forever with most birds, not sure if Greys/Amazons can chew Java wood that thick. You could also put it on the cage ceiling and hang things through it to stop them getting at the attachments. Your birb might get stained by the natural dyes and end up with cute purple patches. Nest n Coco http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/nest-n-coco Nice little coconut, solid lid, bunch of interesting extra parts. Lovebirds, budgies, finches can sleep in it, GCCs could get in it with their tails poking out. Inko has this, he gets a bit of cereal in it at the moment, when he's used to it it will get mixed gradually with shredded paper or something to pick through and make a mess with. He's sat on the top a few times just chilling as well. Simple but nice basic foraging toy with extras Foraging Pineapple (medium) http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/foraging-pineapple-medium Haven't decided who to give it to yet as they all seemed interested. Perfect conure/cockatiel size. Shove treats in the gaps or just hang as is. All natural, perfect for those who love shredding things Indestructabell (small) http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/indestructabell-small Inko has this and loves it, even though it's a bit big-a Grey could play with this one. It doesn't ring well (just clacks) unless you grab it by the underside hoop, which Inko figured out. You could hang rope etc from that so they can fling it around more, or climb and make noise that way, while using the cage space more. Star Struck http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/star-struck Just a little chewable toy; Steve has it for nibbling on. Inexpensive (from this site) and nice, reuseable parts, just a good little filler Foraging sisal nest http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/foraging-sisal-nest This is really really good for the price from here; elsewhere it would be worth it too. Steve has it, with millet in the basket (at eye level) as a simple foraging toy, though he has refused to touch the millet so far. It's a really good size, great for beginner/dumb foragers, chewers, or as a nice cage decoration. Lots of different colours, textures, and bits to chew Coco door forager http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/coco-door-forager They've all been wary of this one so far. There's stuff inside, held in place so it won't fall out, but about half of it is just large coloured blocks of wood-boring for little birds, hard to get at for bigger. There's also a bunch of chewable stuff, including a corn cob minus corn in mine. Larger conures would probably like it, GCCs I'd worry about getting head stuck in the smaller holes, not sure, and have to test if Ohtori could fit or not. Sun conure size would be fine. Greys etc could like it too, but the inside might not do much for them Wave calcium perch (small) http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/wave-calcium-perch-small Small is a good size for cockatiels etc. Super messy, just like chalk, gets everywhere and colours everything. Colourful bird feet are cute but so much mess. Hang it vertically instead to minimise Bamboo perch (medium) http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/bamboo-perch-medium I thought they sent a large by accident because this perch is HUGE, but the packaging itself said medium. It says 2cm diameter, it was a bit over 3cm, and longer than 40cm. However the fibrous parts weren't really on mine, like they'd all been cut off leaving little nubs and bumps. Ohtori likes them, though, and bamboo is nice and smooth and easy to wipe. Do recommend if you have the room Polly's Shower Perch (small) http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/pollys-shower-perch-small The photos show three suction cups, that must be the large since it only has two. It's... okay. It's mostly waterproof (there is an exposed screw, and the hoop at the other end), the main perch is ribbed for better grip, you can rotate/angle the perch. However the suction cups are exposed to curious beaks so can be pried off, and they had issues sticking to a lot of surfaces. For the shower it's eh, for a window it's pretty good, just expect it to fall off sometime or maybe get pried off by bird. I got a random Chinese shower perch from Amazon that was better than this, though the perch on it was wooden. I think a Grey/Amazon might be pushing the weight limit, since the cups aren't great, but smaller birds are fine. Ohtori had a shower on it and loved it, right now it's by Inko's cage with a toy hanging from the end. Teepee (small and large) http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/teepee-small They were on sale, and it would be nice to have something for winter that's safer than a Happy Hut to put in overnight if it gets cold, these looked worth trying. The small was for Inko-it's about perfect size, and happened to come in green for Green Cheek. It's fleece, I think anti-pill, it's a bit fuzzy but no strands are visible. It's tied and held together at the top by string, you could replace with something else. It seems fine, if he uses it then it will get checked daily for chewing. The large one was for Ohtori and came in blue for Blue-throated. It's uh way bigger than the small lmao, a Grey could likely get into it comfortably. The top of it however, the scrunched up tied together part, is more roughly made and exposed-like the edge of the fleece sheet, or as if the fleece was scraped off, and it does seem to thread if you pull hard enough. Either it would have to be placed in a way that the top is outside of the cage, or I'll try cutting that part off and see what the edge then looks like. As is I wouldn't risk this one, Ohtori would climb on top at night and chew in anger for a while. The small teepee isn't made like that at all so IDK if it's just how the large is or not Preen and Scritch basket http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/preen-and-scritch-basket Quite big but nice! The photos don't show the depth, it's a true basket, almost as deep as it is wide. Very crunchy and chewable, you can pull the sticks on the edges out, and the chains are a nice extra. Even if they never use it to rub against it's a really good chew toy. Recommended Crazy 8 foraging toy http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/crazy-8-s Inko has this but it seems he maybe doesn't have the strength to bash it around enough to solve it via violence after all, or maybe he doesn't see through the purple that there's more food in there. Solid but heavy, so yeah Inko is having issues but sun conure/Senegal/etc sized birds and above should manage. It has little balls in the sticking out parts that rattle so even if your bird is dumb it might like shaking it about for the sound, with bonus treats appearing now and then. Foraging Parrot Party http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/foraging-parrot-party There's another toy, on this site at least, that's £10 more but seems to be exactly the same http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/four-way-forager so be careful. It's fairly big but Ohtori started using it yesterday and spent a very long time with it, and didn't get everything, so it looks like a good if simple long term thing. You could make it more difficult later on-I saw a video where the owner had taped the lids down, maybe not that but you could tie it with something bird safe or whatever. It spins about and pulling on one side affects the opposite, so that adds a bit more challenge to it. Great for conure sized birds, Greys and such also but beware of them chewing on the lids-they're not flimsy but birds of that size could probably crack it or shave bits off if inclined to do so Foraging pail http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/foraging-pail Really recommended for the price. A decent size plastic bucket with chains and extra toys attached, and seven chewable toys (good foot toys for bigger birds) inside. Two loofahs, three finger traps, two different wooden ones. Refill when they've chewed through, use as a simple foraging toy, store toys in it. Chewable plastic for bigger birds but conures should be fine, though may chew the attached toys. Foraging tumbler http://www.northernparrots.com/food-tumbler-foraging-parrot-toy-prod371198/ The clear winner of them all-Ohtori has spent so much time with it since it was put in his cage. The size doesn't matter; it's easily spinnable from the bottom and since he isn't big enough to spin it from top to bottom he learnt to climb above it and turn it with his foot. It has different difficultly setting, is clear so they can see the rewards being worked for, very solid, no parts to get any toes or beaks etc caught. Would definitely recommend, may get one for Inko in the future.

There are lots of cheaper generic versions on Amazon, for only a few dollars, so you could try one and if it doesn't work out for you it should be a good window perch. This is the same as the other one I mentioned: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XNWXSS5/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me= Bird can't get to the cups, and you can manually tighten them as you want, so it's secure and hasn't fallen off so far. Steve hates it though

I love Steve and Tori also it's so funny/strange/sad to see pictures of Steve, my ladytiel Rosy was a lutino as well (and Ama was nearly as infatuated with her as Ohtori is with Steve) but they look so insanely different. Maybe it's an obvious difference, to bird owners, but I feel like if I told a non-bird-person Steve and Rosy were the same kind of bird, only super different, they'd look at me weird and be like yeah... okay good... that's nice. Hello all! I've enjoyed lurking this thread for a while, and now I've plopped dropped a deposit for a Quaker Parrot - I've been hanging around the local bird shop for a couple weeks and the Quaker and I really hit it off. I'll be picking it up when I get back from an emergency trip overseas, and in the meantime it's getting a DNA test so we know if it's a he or a she. I've got like a billion cables around the place - what do you use to parrot-proof everything? I was looking at some braided metal sleeving - it's stainless steel that's birdsafe, right? Or I could just go for the rubber kind, so long as I can stop the bird before it chews through and gets hurt. Wow, I'm kind of nervous, I haven't had a bird for a while. Had a when I was younger. Rockopolis fucked around with this message at 01:26 on Aug 13, 2017 |

I wouldn't worry about cables, just as long as your bird isn't unsupervised in the same room as them. If they're not power cables, they're not necessarily unsafe, it's just more so you don't have to replace them.

I never have to worry about my Wuaker chewing on random cables, but then, she's skittish and doesn't really go off exploring beyond her cage. Until the sight of a duster or a broom scares her into flying down to the floor , anyway.
