I have come to discourse on the profound inequities of the American political system.

11 Bomb hits of 250Kg apiece is not going to be enough to sink an Essex Class carrier. It's definitely going to be enough to brutally damage her though, probably docksiding her for upwards of a year. In a sense, it's a tactical victory but in terms of total CV count on the Paciic, the Allies hold the upper hand, counting all not-reefed US and UK carriers.

Grey has one moderately (I think) damaged Light Carrier that seems to not have massive fires and systems damage and unless it takes more damage probably can get back to harbor. Essex has still taken nearly a dozen bombs ad is going to be moving pretty slowly, doesn't seem to have a ridiculously huge escort with it, and doesn't have a ton of air cover from nearby fields so can be stalked a bit over the next day or two and should still be in range.

Decisive Campaigns looks great. Which one would you recommend to start with?

Barbarossa is the newest and most interesting of them, but if you plan on doing goon multiplayer, WtP is the better option. It's the only one I own and I've gotten a good amount of enjoyment out of it, but it's also the oldest and it shows.

If you want more tactical-level stuff, I'd also recommend taking a look at Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm. But maybe save that for after you've gotten used to playing grognard games first :shobon:

A couple of our patrol boats decide to charge a couple of battleships. The Emperor will hear of their bravery, high command sighs at their stupidity.

The US 43rd Division is putting up a strong if futile fight.

We lose a Zero to Liberator fire. Just who are they here to Liberate anyway?

Time to move the Kido Butai to the east a bit to see if we can find that wounded carrier.

There was bugger all these guys could do against 15” and 16” guns.

How are patrol boats worth 10 points each anyhow? That seems like an awful lot if patrol boats are what I think they are.

Keiko Maru was a converted cargo ship of approximately 3000 tons. Busho Maru was similarly a converted cargo ship of about 2500 tons. They're really more like Armed Merchant Cruisers than patrol boats, but their purpose was to act as auxiliary gunboats for landing operations and not as commerce raiders. Either way, they're significantly larger than what would normally be considered a patrol boat, which is why they're worth more. I'm not sure if the game allows them to carry cargo as well.

Warspite is the first time we've seen the Royal Navy in awhile, right?

And for the thread's resident Pacific War historians, since it's the theater I know least about : how common was it for ships from other Allied nations to join US-led task groups? I know during the ABDA days in the early war it was common for the British/Dutch/Australians to cluster together because that's all that was in theater really, but would a RN battleship or carrier have joined in a predominantly US force like that later in the war? Or were the Commonwealth forces/the Dutch a bit more independent in their commands?

Not very common past the desperation stage of 1942. In general, RN fleet units were based out of the Indian Ocean and so had a more difficult junction with the USN. The Dutch fleet was pretty well gutted by the early battles around Indonesia (esp. Java Sea). Australian cruisers commonly served alongside USN units during the Solomons campaign (hence why the USN named a cruiser Canberra). For a bit of contrast, though, check out the career of HMS Victorious (R38), a British carrier that served with the US Pacific Fleet for a period in 1943 when the USN was desperately short of carriers.

You hear very little of the Royal Navy's role in the Pacific, partly because they were on the defensive for so long and the dominant narrative is the US vs Japan.

When it did come time to go on the offense in '44-45 the US did tend to relegate the smaller, shittier tasks to their allies (e.g. the Australians on clean up detail in New Guinea). Yes the RN was at Okinawa and would have been there for Operation Downfall, but they were pretty clearly second fiddle. Hell, Halsey wrote:

As long as they're in the command radius of the Air HQ that has torpedoes they can use them.

Its mainly waves of Liberators flying around today.

We bring down a couple of hurricanes.

Are these from the carrier or just landed when her deck was ruined a few days ago.

That's not a carrier, but its some kills.

Dammit!

We send another force into retreat.

We gunned down a good number of their planes.

Two more confirmed kills.

Not a carrier, though she was a cruiser... HMAS Canberra supported the landings at Guadalcanal then went down fighting alongside the yanks at Savo. They did name one of their ships after her which was pretty decent.

The Essex may have made port at Efate to try and pump out some of the water coming in the various holes those Vals punched in it so it can limp to a proper drydock. Once disbanded in a port base, they are no longer valid targets for Naval Attack missions. Therefore, you might do well to assign some of the KB's strike groups to a Port Attack primary mission targeting Efate. Note that when assigned Port Attack as a secondary mission, they'll only strike a port in range if they find no targets at sea, and as we've seen, the Allies have an endless supply of cargo ships to distract your pixel-pilots.

Just remember to flip them back to the Naval Attack primary mission afterwards :ohdear:

A night attack? That's a change in tactics.

It's apparently the day to blow up our planes on the runway.

We bring down a couple of more Ventura's.

Once more we hammer into the US forces at Rabaul.

One of their larger forces attacks us, but we hold them off.

I think the Essex has escaped. Or gone down. It's more likely the former though, the damage is to low to be overly hopeful.

That -supply modifier is killing your adjusted AV. Stand down your troops until you can ship in more supplies to Rabaul, wait a turn, then attack again. Once you have supplies in the hex, you can also use a battleship group to bombard every day, which will help soften up their troops considerably.

When your troops have a -supply modifier, there's also probably not enough supply in hex to replenish your ships or their air groups. Hopefully there are some cargo ships on the way!
