This to me really isn't anything new for Virginia as I'm in the loving sticks where you see stores with whites only signs and when people ask about them it's either "oh heh I thought that was a funny antique heh heh" or "That a problem, boy?", or there's old rear end trees with lynching grooves in the branches. It's always been a thing, just the election made it seem acceptable and even cool to outside observers, and the people that had been banging the drums of white supremacy for years/decades/their entire life/generations felt vindicated.

Twitter's CEO is an alt-right proud boy and they've been harboring nazis since it's inception. twitter specifically has an api user flag that prevents that person's tweets from being displayed in France or Germany because of anti-nazi laws.

Also look at loving lovely people on local news articles and youtube comment boards and such. The nazis haven't ever been especially quiet on the internet. The trumpenreich has definitely made them more open and bold, though.

On the whole surge of altright/neo nazi types - they've become smarter and more subtle in recent years. Remember when we first heard about Richard Spencer? Not your stereotype, white trash, meth addict looking KKK member. Not out there shouting death to browns and Jews - his message was much more subtle. So its easy for them to appeal to conservatives; we need to get back to our Christian roots / immigrants are ruining the economy / terrorists want to bring sharia law to this country. That, combined with the far right media bubble (liberal media elite are pushing the agenda - here's the stories they don't want you to hear) and continual search for conspiracy (pizzagate, stolen votes, etc). Its easy to see how they could have grown in popularity
