"Thoughts on Charlottesville: The "call this terrorism" reaction is certainly not incorrect, but I worry that the motivation is "we need to broaden the legal definition of terrorism so that he can be charged that way." Increasing police powers will not work out well for us, and the idea that law enforcement can be redirected toward fighting racism denies the reality police are the principal antagonists. Nobody has killed more activists, especially poc, than the police & FBI. Pressuring police to do the right thing here is, at best, a wasted effort. At worst, it will backfire spectacularly, aaand primarily hurt poc in the movement. That being said, it is literally terrorism, in that the point of murdering anti-racist activists is to scare everyone into staying home next time. The only response is to show up in even greater numbers next time. The only proper response to white nationalist violence is a show of solidarity and strength. Show up for each other. There are certainly more of us than there are of them, we've just gotta get organized."

I've been working with the DSA here in Michigan on a few things as a representative of Our Revolution MI, and joined the Detroit chapter last February, but this has pushed me to officially set up monthly recurring dues and join national as well. The murdered comrade was a Michigan Bernie volunteer, and apparently friends with some of our people. I'm mad, nude, and proudly red damnit!

I'm gonna get a solid red flag instead because: 1. It's 5 bucks instead of 40. 2. The only shipping options for the DSA flag are Aug. 18th-25 or Aug-23 to Sept 5th. edit: I hemmed and hawed and got the DSA flag instead. I hope it arrives on the 18th. Good news: nice person at action wants to hear more about the DSA and to go to SF's next general meeting. Bad news: ensuing conversation leaves me ~80% convinced she's an unmedicated schizophrenic. Possibly never even diagnosed, despite having been hospitalized after being ruled non compos mentis after having shot at some cops who she thought were shooting her, and then who definitely did shoot her. Stay safe, SF comrades, haha. (No but seriously, white lady with a walker despite not being quite old enough for one. I encouraged her to speak to a therapist about her traumatic experiences, but she's been in the area for two weeks, which means she's due for an inexplicable bout of persecution and altered behavior from the people around her which drives her somewhere else.)
